A new to my collection Stevens 44 in 25&20 has this neat flip over front sight. Been on there a while, possiblity factory? The tang peep was gone but I dug through my boxes and found one that looks right.

Looks like an original Beech sight which were a popular add on to many rifles. They made them in a few different styles, Post, pinhead etc. Yours may have had an ivory bead but most of them have been broken off over the years. I've got a couple of minty ones and if you look at the top of the globe you might be able to see the name and patent dates. Looks to be original to the rifle.

Yes, it looks like it could be an original Beach and not Lyman's #5 version of it when Beach's patent expired. If it is a Lyman there will be a Lyman name on top of the globe. They get confusing with fine details.

I have one on a 44 that has the patent date on top of the globe.
Is it a Lyman?

I have a 44, a Favorite, and a Rev-O-Noc all with that front sight.  Seems to have either been a popular add on or a factory offering.

My shooting partner has one with a post and an aperature as the two sights.

It's a lot more useful with a tang sight than the pin and post version.  I've never seen another one.

I've never really trusted Smokey the Bear.  Everytime I see him I wonder what happened to the Boy Scout that was orginally wearing that hat.

Thanks for all that information. Since being informed where to look I found Lyman on the top. It is so faint it took a strong light and magnifier to see and read it. I would not have found it if I didn't know where to look and what it might say.
