bore scope pic. carbon fouling?
Print Post
One of the local benchrest shooters recently told me that you can't learn to properly clean a barrel unless you use a bore scope.   I decided to see what I was missing out on.  Here is a picture of the inside of my CPA 38-50 RH barrel.  It's only been shot with black powder.

I've got what I think is hard black fouling for most of the last 2/3 of the barrel.  I haven't seen this in any of my other rifles, black powder or otherwise.

What do you think it is?

A clear picture would certainly help with the diagnosis.

I have read that automotive throttle body cleaner is good for carbon removal. If it doesn’t come clean it might be the Black Death. I heard that that was nasty.

Lightened a bit with PhotoShop, does this help any?

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

If the bluing method “blued” the bore, it could just be residual bluing left from shooting and cleaning which over time would be removed…..  Carbon fouling usually shows up in the throat in my experience.

Seems like the blackened areas have fairly sharply defined
borders.
Probably not wearing away bluing.
Seems more like carbonaceous fouling from powder or maybe lube that would flake off as you scrub the barrel

Automotive carbon cleaner could be tried

I just deep cleaned my Martini International .22 with Birchwood Casey C4 Carbon Remover. Worked well to remove a slight carbon buildup at the leade in front of the chamber.
Then I followed it up with Turtle Wax Chrome cleaner-on a
Bore Snake for about 10 pull thru's to polish some haze on some areas of the bore.
Bore scope now reveals virtually Nothing on the bore surface
but Metal, with some Micro pitting
Now I have to re-foul the barrel before my next match.

That was something that crossed my mind too.

Shooters choice makes "carb out" and looking at the rim fire forums, it seems to be the best option.  It only takes carbon out, and leavs the other stuff so it doesn't mess up their barrel seasoning

I'll try a little bit of carbon cleaner.  At least with the bore scope I should be able to quickly see if it makes a difference.

I should add too that I took this picture after a bit of scrubbing with JB bore paste because there was a tight spot ahead of the chamber from some built up fouling.

This is the same lube ( DGL ) that I've used successfully for a number of years in my black powder target rifles so I can't imagine it's that.  When I ran out of NAPA water soluble oil I switched to Ballistol & water for wiping between shots.  Maybe it's baked on Ballistol.

Ballistol WILL carbon your barrel up.

That’s why I stopped using it years ago. It reacts from the fire and heat of combustion with black powder.

While not particularly on topic, I recently asked a local 22 bench rest shooter who has competed in national matches what his go to solvent was and he replied G96 Gun Treatment. Any body here have any experience with it?   I have been exclusively using Kroil for everything.

I haven't used it, but I did try Mpro-7 on it and it didn't do anything.  I scrubbed it again with more JB bore paste and it's nearly cleaned up.
