Looking for 25 cal gas check bullets
Print Post
Not wanting to invest in a mould for my 25-35 HW yet, I would like to try some 100+ gr GC bullets hopefully in #2 allow.  The only ones I have found are at Western Bullets but like almost all of the bullets on their site they are out of stock.

Hopefully one of you has some old bullets lying around.

The not so good bore won’t shoot plain base bullets at all but seems to be OK with jacketed ones.

Thanks

Jack

Thanks George,  I will keep that in mind.  I thought I had checked Bullshop's offerings.  I will order some from them for now.

Thanks

My experience with iffy bores leans toward lighter bullets working better than heavy ones but that's not universally the case. I have Lyman's 257420 65G GC mold here and I am currently working with an iffy bore 25-20 WCF. It's working well enough that I'm not going to do anything with the barrel.  If you want a few to try I'm sure we can work something out.

In vintage 25-35 WCF rifles light weight cast bullets may not be the best choice especially in less than perfect bores.
The standard twist rate for the 25-35 was 1/8" and is putting perhaps excessive torque on a cast bullet. For that reason a bullet with lots of bearing surface has the best chance of behaving in the barrel. Loverin type bullets with long full diameter body and short ogive are a good choice. Bullet designs with long bore ride type nose and short full caliber body maybe not so much.

This chart is interesting and perhaps while not aimed at the older rifles does give some idea of the variations possible.

It also seems that the jacketed bullets can get away with being undersized diameter wise as the gas going around them does not cut them. It may also be that cast bullets do better being relatively oversized for worn bores.

Jack,
I have some “heavy’s” sized to .258” with checks installed. Let me know if you are interested in trying an assortment.

The bearing surface issue may have been the problem with the tapered NOE spitzers that I was trying.  I could not keep them on a 2 ft square target at 100 yds.

When I measured mine it came out at 1-10.  I will do it again just to be sure with a tighter patched brush.  I did try 118 gr bullets so that should be OK assuming the bearing surface issue was OK.  I will check my other molds, but I don't think I have something of that size that is not tapered.

I think of the 25 caliber bullets on our list the NEI 120gn FN-GC has the longest bearing surface.   I have used it in a 1/10" twist and it did OK.
