Borescope photos

Although the rifle is not a single shot, I thought I’d share a couple of borescope photos.  The deer season has ended in Texas, so I was cleaning the rifle prior to storing it in the safe until neck season & took the photos afterwards.

They say if you use a borescope to check the condition of your rifle bore you’ll be disappointed.  Here’s some photos of the rifle bore of a Marlin 336 30-30 I bought brand new back in 2006.  With a 3x9 scope set on 9 power, one inch at 100yds is typical.  At last count the rifle has taken over 50 deer, a few as far as 200yds, & a lot of feral hogs.  The entire bore is in the same condition as the photos.

BTW, I have never shot cast bullets in the rifle.  If I did, I would not be surprised to have bore leading issues.

My 32-40 Green Mountain barrel.  It shoots 1" 200 yds groups when the conditions are right.

Ballards may be weaker,

They're right about being disappointed when looking at bores! A lot of bores that shoot very small groups will make you wonder how when viewed through a bore scope! Best not to have that in the back of your mind, and just forget looking at a bore unless it's not shooting well.

The best advice I received when I bought my bore scope was to ignore tooling marks and only use it as part of your cleaning regimen.
I have a 40/60 Highwall whose barrel looks like road rash with all the pits and divots yet shoots quite well and somehow doesn't lead.

Just for fun, I usually take my borescope to large matches. I offer to let anyone look at their bore just before the match. It’s funny the reaction sometimes you get when a competitor looks down the bore of their rifle for the first time! It really rattles some folks..😂
There’s more to the game than just shooting!👍😁

I bought a bore scope a while back mostly because I had a defective Green Mountain barrel on one of my C. Sharps 1885's.  The defect is so big it makes a significant hitch when a cleaning patch is pushed through on a jag.  Sadly it's not like Jacks rifle, it's more like a shotgun.  That one will get a new barrel this year.

Interestingly the other day I decided to run the borescope through some of my other barrels just to see what they look like inside.  I have a 38 cal RKS barrel that actually shoots well, but it doesn't look all that different from Texas Macs picture!  It surprised the heck out of me when I saw that Smiley.

If you don't find anyone in your area, the one I used that took the photos for this thread was purchased on Amazon.  The current price is $99.99.  Here's the link: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I'm very pleased with it.  It takes photos as good as the very expensive Gradient Lens Corp. Hawkeye Borescope that I sold after buying the one on Amazon since the Hawkeye did not interface with a computer or smart phone.
