How crazy/dangerous is a No. 4 RB conversion from 22rf to 38 Special?

Great idea if you're tired of seeing and want your face rearranged

I have a number four in beautiful condition that I had converted to 32 S&W long and it has become a favorite of mine. The difference between the 32 rim and the 32S&W other than ignition is that the former uses a .316 diameter bullet while the latter uses a .312. My rifle had such a nice bore that I didn't want to alter it but after a lot of experimentation I found that a soft 90 grain bullet sized to .314 and well lubed shoots quite well. To shoot a 38 special out of one of these rifles would require you to re-bore and re-chamber it plus the centerfire conversion which seems like a lot of work just to blow yourself up.

#4's shoot loose with high velocity 22 rimfire ammo. Only shoot the std velocity stuff in them. Don't even think about a centerfire cartridge.

I agree with the above, but someone doesn't. I asked this because I saw this in an auction I'm watching this Saturday.

For as long as guns have been around there's always guys with just enough talent to redo guns that will ignore what's safe. And often they sell those guns to unsuspecting newbies who then chamber some factory round in it and blow it up.
That one is a ticking time bomb to some poor guy who buys it.

Why not just buy a hand grenade. My #4 converted to 32S&W is perfectly safe with loads at the same pressure as the original 32 rimfire. After 600 rounds or so there are no signs of the action becoming loose and it is a joy to shoot. I'm not an idiot.

It may be, but some day someone will drop factory ammo in it. Then what happens?

This is something that I take into consideration but remember that factory loads for the 32S&W are loaded to a maximum pressure of 12000 psi which is very close to the rimfire. This is done because they know that a lot of this ammo will be used in old, weak, top break revolvers. I'm confident that these loads are safe in the rolling block.

12k is different force on the breech blocks with the tiny .22RF base, comppared to the large diameter .32 S&W case size. Your loads may well be safe, but doesn't make a factory load safe.
