Rem #2 32/20 groove diameter

I need someone to second what I am finding.

Rifle is a Number 2 deluxe in 32/20. Odd number of grooves.

Best I can measure the slug it comes to a groove diameter of .3074”

Serial number is 14,xxx. Anyone else have a Remington 32/20 barrel close to this diameter? It appears to be close to my Hepburn 32/30 and thats the mould I am going to use since its a perfect match.

I have a couple #2 sporting rifles in .32-20 (marked 32W on the barrel). I measured one a while back. It is .308" bore, .3115" groove.

Has yours been rechambered from .32 rimfire? These typically run .300" bore, .307" groove.  That sounds closer to what you have. If your barrel is just marked 32 it was originally a rimfire. Please post some clear close photos of the action.

I have a E.Remington Hepburn marked on the barrel 32.20 with a
.308" bore. I use a Saeco #254 115gr mold (casts a .309 bullet) with good results.

This barrel is marked

32.W

Quite positive it is original and is a factory 32W chambering. Are your guys barrels odd number of lands? I measured mine by wrapping it tightly in aluminum from a Coca-Cola can and mic’d it then subtracted the thickness of aluminum.

Wait a minute… I subtracted the thickness of the aluminum twice. Is that correct?

I looked at both of my .32W #2s. They are 5 groove, so are the 32 rimfires. .311" is the published nominal groove diameter for .32-20. Either your measurement is off or you have an oddball rimfire barrel that was chambered or rechambered to .32-20. Please post some clear close up photos of the action, breech block and 32W stamp.

Very nice rifle!  That is a fairly early one that uses a left over M1871 centerfire breech block. It does look all original. A great find. 32-20 was introduced by Winchester in 1882, so it was made after that, but from the features I can see, before the company reorganization in 1887-1888. If groove really is .307"  perrhaps they initially used a rimfire barrel before going to the standard .311" groove 32W barrel.
