1885 Winchester single shot

I have one serial #6436 in 40-70 straight sharps.
Here’s the question. Stamped on the top flat from  left to right-
C-L 40-70 Sharps STR. 
any idea what the C-L means?

I was told by a member it mean CAL. 🙄 duh.
