Steven;s No44 spotted at tiny local show to me

I saw this weekend a stevens 44 single shot. Screw heads on action had some buggering. Generaly worn patina metal finish. Wood excellent though. Was in 25 rimfire. Half round half octagon barrel. Guy was asking $325 but told me make an offer. Was it worth it ?.  What would it cost to get a centerfire breechblock ?. I could I guess have it sleeved for 32 S&W long had I got it. I passed as I did'nt know if it would have been too costly a project.

If it were me I would have grabbed it. I think that it's worth that just for parts. Consider that a 44 that hasn't been too badly butchered is bringing between $400 and $600. To convert the breechblock and have it re-bored or lined and a bit of cosmetic work should come in at under $500. So for $800 or so you have a good rifle in anything from 25/20 WCF up to 44/40. What can you buy in today's marketplace for that kind of money?

Ballards may be weaker,

Heck I've got a Stevens 44 barreled action in .38-40WCF I was asking $350 for and not getting any bites at all. No finish, but a nice bore and complete action. I'd think a 44 that's a complete rifle would easily be worth $325 or an offer.

Its not to hard to make reloadable .25 rimfire cases. I had a 2-part youtube video on making it from .22 Hornet brass. Unfortunately youtube sensors deleted part one which was about reforming the case to .25 Stevens. Part two is still posted and shows how to convert the case to reloadable rimfire.

I've posted about doing this here before. Use the search function to find more info. I also have written instructions that I can share.
