Shooting with hearing aids

As of a couple of days ago I am officially an old man - was just fitted with a set of high-end hearing aids. I checked, at around $3500 for each ear, they cost as much as two high-end rifles. But no charge to me since I'm a veteran & the cost was covered by the VA. As I get used to wearing them the obvious question is how compatible are they when using electronic ear muffs. Or should I take them out when shooting? I'm sure many of you wear hearing aids. What do you hearing aid uses do or suggest?

I take mine out and use ear plugs.

I take mine out before I get to the range so they won't amplify anyone else shooting.

They are not supposed to amplify any thing over 90(?) decibels. I used the yellow foam plugs and muffs for many years. The foam irritated the ear canal, but it was a good combo. For the past 5 or more years my first set of aids and muffs have been working well. For the past 12+ years there has been no change in the prescription.
I'm not competing any more and often times there is no one else at the range. It also helps that my reloads and caliber choices are far from magnum class.

My audiologist told me that the noise cancellation would only be good for behind well behind the firing line.  He said to wear plugs and muffs when shooting.  Also, when I wear the muffs over the aids it gets uncomfortable as the muffin is pushing on and the aid.
Cheers,
Steve

On the line shooting rifles, I wear ear muffs. In competition where there is movement, think Cowboy Action or IDPA, I wear Walker ear plugs.
Indoors, plugs under ear muffs.
Good luck.

My dad wears the hearing aids he got from the VA, they are completely in the ear, not the ones that hang over the back. They are set on the bone due to blown out eardrums. He shoots with earmuffs over the top because he cannot understand range commands without them, he can I only tell if someone is talking

If I wear mine near the line the report of the rifles is much less than if I was not wearing them. I too have high dollar ones. The instructions from my wife were: "Get the best ones they have". I often obey. Smiley

My late Brother was a guide and wrangler for several outfitters in Western Wyoming and worked in the 'Thorofare' and South area. He was in the business along with being a driller on gas rigs for about 15 years. One season he a had a pair of elderly clients with sweet elk tags and was putting together a twenty mile horseback ride up to his base camp. As usual he wanted to set down the rules, pair up the two hunters with the right horses, inspect rifles and sight in then rig and tie down his pack animals. One gentleman showed up with two rifles, a Winchester 30-06 and his new custom built 358 Norma that he said he'd only shot once but was going to be his go-to rifle.

Both hunters were taken to a rather crude bench consisting of a log elevated on 2x4 X braces. One guy shot his 7 rem mag to 3" which was fine. Then the older gent takes his 358 Norma, settles in,  and lights off a factory Norma 250 grainer. The rifle slams him hard as my Brother claimed he failed to keep it tight. The recoil hit him, knocked off his glasses but worse knocked his denture plate out of his mouth. He jumped up startled but in doing so stepped on his denture plate smashing it. According to my Brother he lived on soup, Ramen Noodles and pancakes until they packed out.

Not hearing aids but a ridiculous scenario. My old Brother was going to write a book about these experiences but passed too soon at a hospital in Salt Lake. Shamefully while he was dying ( tooth infection ) his two prized mules and three horses and tack were stolen.

I am simply deaf.  Years ago I was banned from every range within reasonable driving distance because I'm usually not even aware of range commands.  Nor do I know anyone who has a private range.  Nonetheless, while I am quietly envious of those of you who not only make-do with hearing aids but are allowed to shoot with them at public ranges and in competition, I still wish you only the best.

Guys,

Thanks for all the comments & observations.  After starting this thread I spoke with a couple of guys that shoot at my club.  Both keep their hearing aids in while shooting with electronic muffs.  Although I have yet to attend a match since getting the hearing aids, I tried them with two brands of muffs which does not seem to be a problem, i.e., no feedback & the muffs are comfortable with the hearing aids.

BTW, for those of you considering hearing aids, prior to getting mine from the VA, I extensively researched the well-know high-end brands.  If I had to pay for them, the Philips brand through Costco would be my first choice - highly rated & with features & quality close to the substantially more expensive Starkey brand which is what the VA gave me.

Wayne,
In the first post, you said “As of a couple days ago I am officially an old man” then told about your hearing aids….
I didn’t think hearing aids had anything to do with it!!😂😂😂

I never wear mine when shooting.
I would suggest you make sure the person fitting them is very fully qualified when they ajust them to yours ears.
Just because they make sounds louder doesn't mean you can hear better.
Mine were fitted by an unqualified guy in the shop and it was only recently I had them looked at by university trained woman who had her diploma from a good university on the wall and the difference was amazing.
I can control mine from my phone as to the how loud and whether indoors or out or in a restraurant.
I don't like the damn things and only use them for the television.
For shooting I find that with my Walker electronic muffs I can hear all range orders.
I personally think most of these so called hearing aid places that seamed to spring up like mushrooms are a bit of a rip off.

Yup, I was an old man before I got the hearing aids.  Sad  But now I have less good reasons to deny the fact.   Cry
