I've been watching this topic ever since it first appeared.  Since no one wants to touch it, I'll give a "guy on the ground" answer.  For 5 years, 1974-1979, I was a forester in the same location where the Patterson-Gimlin film was shot.  These hominids are big, fast, incredibly strong, agile, very intelligent and are more at home in the woods than any of us.

I've attended several professional meetings where these big hominids were discussed.  Back in the 70s, I was at a meeting in BC where someone asked Grover Krantz, an anthropologist who studied these critters for most of his professional life, what a guy should do if he shot one.  Krantz' one word answer was "reload".

Krantz was an advocate of killing one, had thought a lot about it, and actively hunted them.  He carried a bolt action rifle with a low power scope, maybe a Lyman Alaskan.  Caliber was some sort of belted .30 caliber magnum.

Taking a shot at these things with any sort of single shot is a really bad idea.
