Chris,

That rabbit hole is not to be feared.  It is a welcoming technique you will find applicable to more than just the .461 No. 1 Gibbs.

Many years ago (November 2009) I wrote a short tutorial on paper patched bullets that I self-published on my website.  It's not well-known, but those who have read it have generally given me favorable comments.  For what it's worth, here is a link:  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

The methods I describe in my article are the methods I still follow.  I have loaded and fired thousands of paper-patched bullets.

So cut some paper, get your fingers wet, and start loading cartridges for these rifles that they were designed to shoot.

Good luck,
Curly

P.S.

My good friend, curdog, knows what he's talking about.

Well, gang.  Fire season is long.....and recovery around the farm from a long fire season is, well...also long.  But alas...not much of an update on the Field's Patent 461 #1, other than to report that I have ordered some .451 PP bullets and paper for patching.  Hope to have a few rolled up in the next week or so....we shall see.

Did some experimenting tonight and managed to get 10 rolled up and looking decent, although certainly room for improvement.  I'm assuming the technique will come with practice.  Guess the good news is that if they're loose, uneven or just don't quite line up perfect, I just strip it off and try again, right!?

One question:  On several of them, the 'tag end' of the wrap seems to have not quite adhered, so it's pulled away from the rest of the wrap by just a bit.  Is this normal, or is this a technique thing on my part?  I'm using 9lb onion skin, wrapping per Curly's excellent instructions.  Will it lay back down when I apply lube?  Do I use a dab of glue to hold it down?

Thanks, all!  I am excited to start down this road!
