If you’re not familiar with spalting, when a tree dies a fungus will start eating the wood , so to speak. Wood is cellulose and the fungus goes to work and in doing so turns parts of the wood in streaks, black, grey, brown and some pretty cool shades. Some woods spalt much better, maple being one. You have to catch it at the right time otherwise it becomes punky, soft and no good.
