Help me out Sight ID - Soule sights
Print Post
Help me out, please.  I have 4 sights that I thought were Baldwin.  I bought these a few years ago, and was going to convert my rifles to them, but went with MVA instead before I used these ones.  I thought they were Baldwin.  Today, I looked at one, and the sight moves the same as MVA, i.e. turn the soule clockwise and the sight moves right.  I know Baldwin moves opposite, that is one of the reasons I never installed these, thinking they were Baldwin.

Who made these sights?  no makers mark, only very low number serial numbers (below 200).  One has an S marked on the back of the staff at the bottom.

I think Baldwin also had brass windage knobs Dave? Those look like they might be Lee Shaver sights. Either standard grade or super grade?

Lee's sights have rounded top of the staff, and he doesn't make a shelf for the vernier scale, just scratches into the staff.

Kelley has brass knobs.

These look like Baldwin, but move the same direction as MVA, and Baldwin moves backwards.

Axtel have the shield A on the base, and these are unmarked.

I'm thinking I'll just go ahead and install and use these, as they work the same as MVA's I have, and quality is similar.  I like that the long range one has 30 minutes of windage.  I think I'll put it on the 45-90 High Wall I just put a barrel on.

I bought these as one big lot, along with some other sights and a bunch of front sights, from a member here about 5 years ago.  I can't remember who it was, he lived in New Mexico and had sold the rifles, but kept the sights.  He sold them to me as Baldwin, and the front sights with them were definitely Baldwin.

I wonder if they have been reversed? Seems like I saw someone mention reversing Baldwin Soule sights here once?

I bought a Hepburn from Gary Quinlan 5 years ago that has a tang sight with the same S marked on the back side of the staff. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the maker other than Gary said the guy was fairly well known something like 20 years ago, possibly more. Steve something, or something Steve, but definitely *not* Baldwin. The Hepburn has a globe from the same maker. Both are quality items.

Steve did do some runs of his sights with right hand threads instead of the left hand for people that wanted them. I don't think all those sights are Baldwins though.
