Does anyone know anything about this gun? I’m really interested but seller is short on info and looks like it may be lipstick on a pig…

I looked at that the other day.  A bunch of mismatched parts.  The only interesting thing about it is the rigby flat type detail on the barrel.  Some decent pictures of that might support the value, but my thought is it's more of a $700 to $800 rifle, if it's demonstrated to shoot well.

The last “pretty” rifle I bought ended up having to have a parts rifle purchased and both sent to Mr. Taylor to be fabbed into a good gun with a new barrel…. It is pretty though. Smiley

Looks to be a #2 cast rim-or-centerfire action that's been hot salt blued.  The cast actions always come out of that process with that plum color.  The barrel looks like it might have a stainless .22 liner.  The 4-finger loop lever and barrel are off of other Ballard rifles, and, of course, the stock is custom.

Somebody using it may have trouble with the extractor getting ahead of the small .22 rounds, which the normal .22 Ballard extractors were designed to prevent.  Not a bad job, otherwise, but I'd think it would have to have the name of a well-known 1920's-1940's gunsmith to have any collector value that would enhance it beyond $500-$750 or so.

No collector by any means, but just don’t see too many $500 Ballards that look that good around here.

I know that it's a personal matter of aesthetics but when I see a rifle with that crappy coppery purple finish I want to vomit. Not long ago I saw an otherwise nice nickel plated Stevens tip up that someone did this to and I couldn't sleep for a week.

Jonathan,

I think that lovely reddish color is a result of hot bluing a casting.

I have seen Krag actions turn a similar but deeper shade of purple when subjected to hot salt bluing.  It's the sort of bluing that was common 60+ years ago.  Is this a J.M. Marlin made action or is it something earlier?

Photos do not show any maker's marks and of course no SN.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

It is indeed a #2 breech block with the reversible firing pin, but since someone polished off the rollstamp I can't say what the action is from. Likely the same as the breech block, but without taking the gun apart not sure.
I agree that it's a lot of mixed bag of parts, and that lovely pistol grip loop lever doesn't belong on the straight grip action. If it had a nice target scope on it I could see the selling price, but without one it's way over priced. I'd have to disassemble the rifle and have the receiver color case, and swap on a different straight grip lever too. Then I'd have even more invested, and be at least happy with the look.

The breech block looks to be all the way down but the extractor doesn’t look to be that far off the breech face?

Ballard extractors do not move the cases very far. But the #3 two piece sliding extractors move cases a bit more than the CF extractors. This Ballard has the typical CF extractor reworked for a .22RF case, so don't expect more than what you see.
