Brief introduction and a few trial pics…

Tried to post several times. Let’s see if it works this time. Glad to be part of the group. My family has a history of building muzzleloaders and blacksmithing. My son and I have built a few cartridge guns with several single shots on the bench now. Here are some recent pics of a room rifle we repaired and case color hardened.

They were whoppers but I resized them for you. That will be a dollar two ninety eight please. Nothing is free. Welcome to the forum. Wink

Grateful!  I failed to upload pics five times. Went and downloaded an app to resize them to under 500 and bam!  lol. I’m still figuring this forum out.

Welcome, Walter.  And thanks for shrinking the pictures, Joe.  It's a single shot.  A British rifle?  .300 Sherwood?

Here are some more details. Pardon me for not telling more. I made the post five times and kept getting rejected due to pic size. Here are the rest of the details…
It’s a break action rifle originally chambered in .300 rook. It is stamped Army &Navy but there are a number of these guns out there with various makers stamped on the barrel. I read somewhere that they were probably made by Webley & Scott. When we got it, it would not hold in full cock. The trigger/ sear was broken. Someone else had “refinished” it poorly in the past. The hinge pin was loose and frozen in place. All of the screws were bummed up. We scraped the stock down past the most recent finish, steamed out the worst bumps (it was rough), touched up checkering, cleaned up the lock panels that were sanded away, reapplied red oil and rubbed oil finish. I also did a sort of bedding job to tighten up the wood to action fit since the previous refinish had boogered that part up too. The barrel was sent to Mr. Bobby Hoyt who reamed it out and rifled it. He chambered it to .38 special. We rebuilt the sear and hinge pin, rust blued the barrel and case color hardened the action. She is in service again! Will be a gift for my wife today!  Merry Christmas.

I’ll also get some additional pictures and try again at posting normal sized pictures. But of note, these little rook rifles have flip up express sites with leaves. For 50, 100, and 150 yards/meters!  I can’t believe a rook rifle hitting anything at 150. Lol

Walter,
When you resize your photos you want the photo size to be below 100 KB for this forum.
Attached are photos showing the photo size at 25 KB, 74 KB and 270 KB.
These were the small medium and large options in my photo program.

It is an enigma!  The barrel is stamped 8,11 which should indicate a bore size of 8.11mm that would correspond with an 8.14. However a chamber cast measured as a 9.3x72. That’s also a common round from the late 19th and early twentieth century. So that started to make sense. 9.3 should equal a .366 caliber. But….slugging the bore resulted in a measurement of .35?!?!  So, I have been loading 9.3x72 brass by neck sizing it with a .35 rem die and loading it with .358 bullets. I have been experimenting with 10,11,12 grains of unique and some 3031 that I found recommended on this forum. All of these shoot 12-16 high at 75 yards.

Could the 8 11 be a proof date? Are there any other proof marks?

There are additional proof stamps. I’ll send pics and you may be able to tell me more.
