Any reason to save 4227?
Dec 19th, 2025 at 11:03am
Print Post
Now that 300 MP is my go to powder is there any reason to save my stockpile of 4227? I can burn it up in the sons pistol cartridges and since it is in the rectangular steel pound and 8lbrs it probably should get used before it goes bad.
Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Charles

Properly stored it shouldn't go bad. I'm still using powder I was gifted back in the 1970's and some of it is 1950's vintage. Always stored in my basement where it never gets too hot or too cold, and is dry.
I'd probably not have stopped using it until it was used up, but I wouldn't worry about it and keep using it wherever you like it.

Do you have other calibers to use it in? It's good for 45-70 loads and a couple others.

Another option might be to sell it and get 300mp since thats what you're using

At $65 a pound I wouldn't be using it for fertilizer.

That stuff's $80 a pound where I live. Tell me about 300MP. Never heard of it.

300MP is an alliant powder, similar to H110 or W296. The guys i shoot with got me to try it. It has been much more consistent in my 32-40, does require magnum primers to set it off reliably though. 4227 would give me the occasional flyer (verified with a chronograph that it wasn't always me  Grin)

It's still available so why not use it. I've found it to be a good alternative to 2400 for magnum handgun cartridges like the 357, 41 and 44 magnums. And of course in reduced loads with 32-40 and 38-55.

actually, there is no reason to save it. send it to me for disposal. no charge for the service.
I have dealt with the 'occasional flyer' ever since I picked up a rifle, so no difficulty enduring it further.

Thanks for the info about 300mp. I'll look for it. Most of what I see on the shelves I've never heard of.

Well I worked out of Dead Horse AK from time to time. (aka Prudhoe Bay) (close to you at the North Pole), and there was virtually nothing on the shelf unless I brought it in myself and it was in my own cubicle.

And, the way things work these days 300MP might disappear tomorrow. Hoard the 4227. It will last a long time.

Is there any published load data for M&P 300 for 38-55?

4227 has been my main powder for 32/40 many years. It was the go to powder Charlie Dells matches. Used  what most others used . Switched 38/55 from 4759 to 4227 when 4759 was discontinued.

4227 is very consistent 14 to 17 grain charges either cartridge. I can make my Harrell's Schuetzen meter throw 1-2 tenth grain variance charges operating the handle inconsistently. Raise the handle with index finger firm tap top, two count then down to drop same finger firm tap it's uniform. Raise with less than firm tap or rush the drop it can drop light.

Disclaimer I load fixed for offhand matches all scores as fired, no re-entry, can't afford a low strike. 4227 does it well every charge thrown the same and check weighed. Way I look at powder if it works leave it alone changes just give me a reason to explain away human error handling the rifle
