The stock bolt problem would be easy to solve, just mill the tail of the tang off at an angle, weld on a tapped sleeve, and the front end is solved.  The tricky part will be to get the hole drilled at the right angle, It would probably need done before you carved the stock, because it will be easier to set up the angles for the drilling in a larger, square block of wood.  You would need to drill the tang at one angle, and the takeup bolt at another.

I looked at my stock of blanks, the 2 3/8" thickness makes it tough.  I have one that would probably serve, but it's only 2 1/8".  Another at 2 1/4", but not as highly figured as you're looking for.  Not sure I ever want to sell my stock of wood that I've had drying for 20 years, though anyway!

The thickness is one of the problems with stock wood for single shot rifles.  Most of the wood guys seem to cut it for shotguns which don’t have cheek rests or odd shapes like this one.

I've seen it done without modifying the tail using a threaded rod with an appropriate bend just past the tail and a couple of washers that fit the recessed hole and a nut on the butt end.
Simple and cheap, like me!

I have a few 3inch + highly figured  black walnut blanks. I also have a pattern  like that with a little less drop.  the bolt goes straight through.
no English walnut that would work though.

I'd leave the original tang as it seems to be and make an extending addition with the male end screwed into it and the hind part angled downward to meet the middle (or near) of the butt plate. Lots of plumbing stuff done that way- why not a rifle?

Must take one heck of a large hole through the stock to slide over the bolt, and then make the turn at the bend and still fit?

Thanks Mike, Tom wants to stick with English or a variation of it.

Thanks Jeff,
I haven’t checked with him recently, but when I did he didn’t have anything that would work.  Most was to thin for what I was working on.
