30-40 Krag Highwall?
Dec 17th, 2025 at 11:24am
Print Post
Been toying with the idea of doing a hi-wall in 30-40 Krag. It is 40-70 now and I haven't shot it since our silhouette matches ceased several years ago. The recent posts on the Krag round got my interest up and I have some brass on hand. Would probably shoot it more often than now. Comments or concerns?

I think changing barrels is fine, but it often is a temporary solution, and later might get the urge to have the .40-70  again. I personally would keep an eye out for a project rifle with a poor bore and put a .30-40 barrel on it, and keep the .40 as it is.

What would be the intended use? More information is needed for one to make comment about the 30-40 for that use.

I have one in 30-40 and been using it with jacketed bullets on white tails.  Very accurate with 180 grain bullets but is too heavy (for me) to lug around in the woods.
I have just brought it back out to shoot cast bullets but haven't hit on a great load yet.  I made a custom base to mount a Unertl Vulture scope.  I found the CCDST action in a pawn shop but was in 6mm x 30-30 Ackley.  I came across an original 30-40K barrel and was very surprised it timed up perfectly.  I was able to re-cut the extractor and away we went.

I have a 30-40 barrel for one of my CPA's.  I've only shot it a little bit as I'm more interested in the 38-50 barrel.

To be honest I would rather have a 30-30 or maybe a 30-30AI barrel instead.  It seems that there are more die options with the 30-30 case.  I am a fan of the Lee Collet dies for instance, to control neck tension.  Those aren't available for 30-40.

I do have a highwall in 30-30 and it's very accurate with 168 amax bullets.

Chris.

My HiWall in 30-40 (30Army) shoots lights out with an Accurate Moulds 200 grain gas check bullet and 20 grains of IMR 4227.  I just neck size then use an M Die to expand and seat to where it almost touches the lands. Tom

The Lee collet dies are available from Lee on a custom basis. Very reasonable cost and quick turn around. I just neck size and seat the Lyman 311284 so that it is just touching the lands. I also index each round when chambering and if I'm feeling real picky I'll index each bullet to the case. IMR 4198 is the best powder for me at 22grains with IMR 3031 a close second. Murder on game and M.O.A. is not uncommon.

Amount my many sins I read Townsend Whelen.
So, have wanted a rifle like his Salina since I first read about it. I had a Highwall in 32-40 who's barrel was pitted so I had a Douglas premium made to match the Winchester #3 30"barrel but in 30-40 Krag.
My rifle has a blued receiver, but a leaf spring action. My gunsmith told me the action is rather soft, so to keep my loads down. Further study (which I should have done first) is confusing. Several sources say that the blue receiver is OK for the 30-40, but those usually have the coil spring action. My action has the barrel mounted leaf spring. Other sources say the 85 is plenty strong for the 30-40 or most anything else. Who knows?
I love the 30-40 round and have several Kags. It is also quite traditional for Alaska, as we were not settled until circa 1910. Our troops the 9th Infantry were the first to be issued the Krag. Any way, my rifle shoots cast lead wonderfully. It also shoot 220 RN jacketed quite well with Whelen's load. I love it. Haven't killed anything with it,YET. Good luck with your 30-40.

Here's my 30-40 flat spring highwall with a 22 inch sporter barrel. There is more information in the reloading section.
