264/6.5 caliber, what cartridge?
Print Post

I’m thinking about something in a 6.5/264 caliber. Interested in a smaller cartridge, around 120-130 grain bullet. Certainly in a single shot.

Any suggestions for rimmed cartridge and or twist rate?

I thought about a 256 Newton, just a little too big. There are a bunch of 30-30 based cartridges, a few based on 223 or 222 magnum that could easily be formed on a rimmed case.

More interested I what twist people are using. Seems like a 130 grain flat base spitzer type bullet should be no problem in a 1/10.buit without trying it would be hood to hear from others.

Oh boy Todd!  I'm down this rabbit hole but I'm putting it in a (new) Fraser or a Number one - making it an NRL configuration... I'll get a lot of chuckles, eye rolls and WTF's when I show up at a match shooting a single shot, but I've determined in my case, "I can't miss fast enough shooting the other configurations" - this will make me slow down and make first round impacts count.

In all of my research I came up with a design that's vintage, 6.5x57 Mauser. (similar to the 6.5x 53r Dutch) and it's really close to the 6.5 Creedmoor so I'm using that reamer and cutting a rim when I chamber.  My parent case for this is either the 307 Winchester or the 444 Marlin.
My intention is probably a little different from yours so I have a 1:9 or a 1:8 twist to go with and I plan to shoot either the 140 or the 147 grain.
There's my 2¢

When you get to that point Greg, I'll make you a deal on 500 or 1000 307 brass.  I've got quite a bit, and it hasn't been exactly a hot seller.

Perfect for single shots, though.

I made this up a long time ago, plan was to re-barrel a Miroku 1885. 444 Marlin case, 40* shoulder, 145 ELD.  I don’t remember case capacity, somewhere around 50 grains water. Then I saw a squirrel or something and just now revisiting a 6.5 something. Might be that Winchester offered the 1885 in 6.5 creedmoor and that burst my bubble

The 6.5x57R Mauser is a spiffy cartridge in my Heeren single and brass is no problem being cheaply available as loaded ammo from Sellier and Bellot with 131 grain SP bullets. A highwall or a 44 1/2 or a #1 Ruger level rifle would be perfect for handling the loaded ammo and extra fast twist would not be required. I've shot up enough of the factory ammo to start working on cast loads with 120-125 grain bullets now.

Wouldn't the 6.5 x 307 be the same as a 260 Remington?

It comes up short a few thousands in case length. Technically the 260 parent case is the 30.06.

The 260 Remington minimum trim, is 307/308 maximum. So it’s splitting hairs

The 444 Marlin case is longer, but rated to a lower pressure and has a slightly smaller rim diameter.

The 6.5 x 53R Dutch was the cartridge of choice for the British Match Rifles and their long range matches (800, 900, 1000 yards, sometimes stretched to 1100 or 1200 yards). Single shot bolt action rifles, iron sights, 10-lb max. wt. limit, 3-lb min trigger pull.  Ruled off the field.  The game now requires everyone to use the 7.62 x 51 NATO cartridge case, but any load, any .30 cal bullet.  Maybe a 6.5 based on a .307 Winchester case has a lot of possibilities.

Don't forget the 30/40 case. Excellent for SS's. You can equal the 260 Rem is you use a short neck.

It takes a 9 twist to stabilize a 140 HPBT so, I believe you'd be safe with a FB 130 in a 10 twist.

I'd use the 30/30 Imp case for up to 23-2400 fps loads. I have a German DST bolt rifle in 6.5 x 57 and it will only reach 2600 with 140 gr bullets.

The old classic, 256 Newton, is as good as any.

7 and 8mm Norma brass is available and is not overly priced and
Can be formed into a number of cartridges to include 6.5,257and 6mm. If you get too carried away dies, if necessary, can get expensive. A look thru Cartridges of the World would give you lots of options. The 257 Robert’s would be my choice for simplicity, but you could find lots of 6.5 and 6mm cartridges, the 6mm Remington comes to mind. Good luck in your quest.
BTW  Raven Rock has the Norma brass

I shoot and hunt with a 7mm Ackley Krag in a Ruger #3 with mostly #1 features.  It is one of my favorite hunting rifles.  I also have a Rolling Block in a 6mm-30/30 Improved which is very pleasant to shoot and I have taken a buck antelope with it.  If I was just going to build a rifle to shoot I would stick to the 30/30 case as the parent although shooting cast in my 7mm Imp Krag is not bad. And then there is my 44 1/2 in 25/35 that is fun to shoot and has taken mule deer and antelope with one shot kills at 200 plus yards.  Let me tell you that it is much more fun to shoot then my Ballard 40-85 with blackpowder and 400 grain bullets!  Grin  Tom
