32 Long for Ballard #2

I just purchased a mould from Old West and it came with the crimp die and shell holder. What other dies to I need to get by? Haven’t been able to find a decent 32 colt set. Also looking for a source for a few pieces of brass to get started. Any tips or help would be appreciated!

Are you talking about the 32 long rimfire?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Surprised that Old West provided a shell holder and crimp die with a mold they made?
Your biggest problem will be finding CF .32 Long brass. There was a guy on Gunbroker who was selling brass he reformed from .32 S&W Long to be .32 Long brass.
C&H4D sells die sets for reloading, but not sure of their turn around time currently. Otherwise keep checking Ebay as I see .32 Long Colt die sets show there occasionally.

It was a set. And actually either one works for this as it has the reversible firing pin. So I can shoot rimfire or centerfire. I’ve been checking eBay pretty religiously.

Babydriver, Old West Bullet Moulds (oldwestbulletmoulds.com) is in Fruita, Colorado. Bernie Rowles will take care of you.

If a 32 Ballard takes a heeled bullet like I'm guessing and you're only shooting it in 1 rifle, I'm not sure you'll even need a full set of dies. I believe an "O" size drill bushing will neck size your brass. Making 32 s&w into 32 long colt is a simple conversion if you have a small lathe. PM me if you need a few pieces of brass to get you started.

I started with a #2 in 32 Long and I had quite a bit of 32 Long Colt brass I had picked up from ammo collectors at gun shows. The bore wasn't the greatest so I had it lined and I went with 32 S&W Long. That makes things a lot easier. If your rifle has a great bore you might consider just going to 32 S&W Long.

My Ballard has actually been relined and left at 32 colt. Would like to leave it that way as it’s original “except for the liner”. I also have a Remington #2 sporting rifle in 32 Exl rimfire, with a centerfire block fitted as well. I do enjoy the process. Maybe I also like hearing people say “I’ve never heard of that”.

I love original Ballard rifles, but since it's been lined I'd have no qualms about running a .32 S&W Long reamer in the chamber to make it easier, and cheaper to shoot and reload for!

Well this happened to be an auction buy. Four photos and that’s it. It’s not the prettiest but it is correct enough for me. Hoping to find another. Something in a 38-55 or 40 caliber.

Nice looking rifle. With a good bore it should be a good shooter.
