Stevens “Walnut Hill”

I have been googling my butt off and have no idea exactly what it is. It’s a 1915 action, Case hardened (visible where it was covered up by a tang sight), pistol grip, full size wood, 26” barrel, firing pin in the 9 o’clock position, tang and barrel appear to have been factory drilled but someone has added some extra holes and has a rather comfortable aluminum butt hook. Sad part is the barrel is really nice inside other than the last 6 inches.

Anybody know exactly what model it is?

It's a model 418. I have one in .22 short. They were made from 1932 up to WWII. Stevens didn't make or sell very many because of the depression.

From what I have found, with a 26 inch barrel you have a Model 418 Walnut Hill Jr. The Model 417 Walnut Hill had a 28 inch barrel. I have a Lyman Model 144 tang sight (has windage adjustment) that I was going to put on the list which was made for Walnut Hills but I don't know whether it was for 417s or 418s or both. Anyone know?

The 417's could be factory ordered with several different options regarding sights, from no sights to a factory installed Lyman 438 scope. There was a sporting  version of the Walnut Hill, a 417 1/2,  which has a lighter weight barrel and a different shaped forend.  The 418 also came in the sporting version as a 418 1/2, with the main difference being the sights. Both the 417 1/2 and the 418 1/2 were available in  .22 long rifle ,  along with  .22 wrf, and .25 rimfire, while the target version of the 417 and 418 Walnut Hill rifles were only available in .22 long rifle or  .22 short.  The Lyman 144 sights did come on the 418's, the 418 1/2 had a different Lyman tang sight a #2a.

I forgot,  the 417's were chambered in  .22 hornet for a short time, but discontinued due to the action not holding up to the .22 hornet's higher pressure.
