CPA making highwalls...

Recently CPA built and sold a highwall built on an MVA action.  I'm kind of in need of a really nice highwall.  I was thinking of calling Wyoming Armory, but maybe I should consider CPA?  Does anyone know the gunsmithing background and experience level of the guys that bought CPA?  I know they are good to deal with as I have bought stuff from them already.

Thanks.  I just found a couple of Youtube videos featuring Mr. Eddington.  A slug gun barrel maker, very interesting stuff!

I have sent them a barrel blank, a lot wall action and a check. They will contour the barrel, fit it to my action and cut a stock for it and send it back. I can let you know how it looks when I get it. When I am to get the package back I have no idea but am hoping some time next month.
I will let you all know how it looks when I get it.

I guess it's odd, but the work CPA has done for me over the years was all HW and Ballard stuff.

That’s a mighty snazzy Highwall they’re showing on their home page!
I’m happy to hear the good reports. I have a rifle on order with them.

I have a 44 1/2 and a martini cadet that need some love!  I was going to make an appointment and drive up after hunting season since they are not far from me!  That Highwall was beautiful!

Hi Chris, I recently sent my CPA in 30/40 Krag back to the factory to have a new barrel and breechblock fitted in 22 RF and they did a good job with a reasonable turn around. The cost, of course was high. The strategy that I've been taking over the last few years is that if there is a rifle type that I want I.E.  Ballard, Highwall or whatever I'll look for one online or at one of the auction houses and sometimes you can get a nice one with a rotten bore at a reasonable price. If the cartridge that you want has a bore diameter greater than the original you can have it re-bored and chambered to what you want and if you want it smaller you can have it lined. I've had this done a number of times with 32 rimfires converted to 32 S&W long cf with great results, what fun shooters. I also had a 32 Ideal re-bored to 44/40 and it shoots MOA. as long as it's safe you can get what you want and the nice thing is that you wind up with an original rifle in the cartridge of your choice at a total cost of far less than a new one. I've had good luck with Rock Island on time auctions and Dennis Olsen in Plains Montana for the work. I've done this with six rifles and am very pleased. Hope you find what you're looking for,  Yrs Truly, Jonathan

I could go with an original.  I have a couple here but they are straight grip so they'd need the tangs bent.  I'm not sure who I'd trust to bend an original straight grip DST tang and not wreck it.  I'd rather start with an MVA for that reason.  I also want to end up with something that has the potential of shooting a perfect benchrest score.  If Steven Durren hadn't retired, he would be at the very top of my list of gunsmiths to ask.  He build one for me several years ago and we decided to try a BRC barrel.  It's the most perfect rifle I own in that it is super accurate and is visually a perfect copy of an original Winchester Special Single Shot.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

This one was built on an original flat side 1885 action, fitted with a pistol grip lower tang and DST. Barrel is a .38-55 Schoyen, Helm buttplate.

Chris.

You might think about getting a (new) pistol grip tang from MVA to go on one of the older rifles.
