New Ballard, and lost interest already

Picked up an interesting Ballard at the Tulsa gun show.  A Ballard (I dont know what number, they confuse me).  Forged frame, 40 something caliber, very shootable bore.  Nothing else to recommend it.  Was excited to find it, bought it for the action and was surprised the bore was good.

Last night was sorting out actions in the safe, and looked at unfinished projects.  The thought came to me, what was I thinking buying another action?  I have a couple of other Ballards already, one forged, one cast rimfire.  I have two 99% completed rimfire Ballards unassembled on my workbench that I have never fired.  I have no need or desire for additional unplanned rifles, I have 60 or so in the safe now, and shoot maybe 3 of them.  I would like to build a #3 fine gallery Ballard, but this action gets me no closer to that.

But, I still acquire more; also bought 2 rolling blocks at Tulsa.  Probably all 3 should be disassembled and listed on ebay and gunbroker for parts.  As well as about 10 or 20 actions out of the action cabinet.  But, I put them away and closed the safe and went onwards last night.

I've reached a point where it doesn't seem worthwhile to sell them, just leave them in the safe for in case I feel like building something.

Looks like a #4 Perfection Dave.
I too have been looking for a forged action, but I need a pistol gripped forged action. I have an original stock set, and DST breech block with loop lever, plus a nice full round George Schoyen barrel in .40-50SS. Just need the action so I can put all my parts into it.
I keep buying more parts when they pop up, just not the parts I need!

Dave, next time you buy rifles, buy only interesting rifles.

My friend Mike says the only cure for the rifle buying disease is death. So true, so final...  Sad

I've noticed that if I turn up my nose at the bounty of the Gun Gods for some dumb reason like "I've already got three of those," or "I don't feel like buying anything today," or "I don't need another project--got a dozen I should be working on now instead of being here at this Show," they get angry and then I don't see anything interesting in my price range for what can go on for years.

So there's that.   Smiley

Dave,
I don't see a problem, but then I sit here, just fat, dumb and happy, oblivious to what goes on around me... filing on a new casting I pulled out of the drawer, or the recent breech block that came off the mill.  Having a few extra lying around to work on is like a security blanket.  I like it.

Wes,
I have been told many times that is the only cure, I'm sure it'll find me, hopefully either working on one or shooting one - best case scenerio.

In my world having an extra forged Ballard action in the stash is a pretty good thing.
