Haenel Aydt 8.15 x 46R Sights

I just won an auction for an Original Haenel Aydt rifle. I have a question about the sights. The rifle appears to have the original barrel and tang sights. My question is what distances are the sights capable of being regulated? I have read some confusing information on the subject.

Not having seen the particular sight on your new rifle, and based on my not all that extensive experience with German and Swiss schuetzen rifles, all of the ones I've seen and shot have had sufficient travel to easily get you out to 200 meters with a decent load.

YMMV

I've never really trusted Smokey the Bear.  Everytime I see him I wonder what happened to the Boy Scout that was orginally wearing that hat.

Typically distances were 175m (Stand Target) and 300m (Field Target). So if your ballistics are the same it should be able to go out to 300m. With my load I find turning it down to the lowest setting works well for 100 yards. There are no clicks or scales on it so bring a caliper to record the height and write it down after.

Nice case colors.

And you even got the saddle sight!  (usually long gone).

Maybe you're aware -- but this tidbit surprised me when I first read about it...

According to the German Gun Collectors Assn, German shooters aimed their rifles using the middle (barrel) sight and the front sight -- and the only purpose of the rear aperture was to sharpen the image of the barrel sights.

Very different than the tang/aperture & front sight sighting method that is so common here in the states.

I did read this recently. What I also find interesting is the thin slot that can be used when the round eyepiece is removed from the tang sight. What I assume is this just extends the sight radius for more accurate aiming but could it also aide in focus like the diopter eyepiece? Hopefully someone like Yamoon that owns several of these rifles can answer.
