28-30-120 stevens

Just bought out on old reloader and ended up with a ton of obsolete stuff.  Trying to decide if buying a gun if worth it.  Got handloader, various tools, anyway any info would be great.

For some of us, having the components dictate whether we buy or build a rifle.

If you decide not to use it, 28-30 stuff should easily sell here on this site.  I, for one, would be interested in what you have.

I have bought shells up to four years prior to owning the gun, I understand.

I've bought brass and dies for certain cartridges and then began searching for the guns! I try not to buy guns in obsolete cartridges if brass and dies are tough to locate.

I ended up with 32-40, 225 win, 219 zipper, 7-30 waters, 25 remington, 30 remington.  That 28-30 seemed interesting.  So might look for rifle.

I didn't need to even buy the components.  Over a few weeks I scrounged 24 pieces of 22 Hornet brass from the range bucket.  That started my quest for one.

The .28-30 Stevens is a fun accurate cartridge.

Amen to that.  It's a cartridge that encourages you to learn about the old stuff.  Sent me down that road 60 years ago.

If you breech seat at the range, you often draw a crowd.  The AR types never saw anything like that.  Especially sweet if your group is just one ragged hole.

Odd guns and even more odd cartridges can lead you into the abyss and in extreme cases financial ruin...

Grin

Have looked for a 28-30 for years. My car tag is 2830. Seems like I should get one. Have one loaded round.

I got in to the 28-30 by buying a large box of the stuff at a gun show.
Brass, cast bullets, dies, 2 bullet molds, etc.
I'm still having to finish up my Stevens 45 rifle so I can actually shoot the caliber.

I have a Pope barrel in .28-35, a very easy cartridge to make, with readily available brass.

Absolutely worth finding or building one in this caliber.  There may be an article about making this brass in an upcoming Journal... Besides just being a sexy cartridge, it shoots well.
