Casting with brass molds

Assuming the ffl is open today,  my new rufle will be in jail for the 10 day waiting period today, but I get to bring the other goodies home. The molds that come with the rifle are brass, and I have never cast with brass molds before, just steel and aluminum. Are there any difference between the mold materials? I usually cast pushing 900 degrees, and smoke the molds when they start sticking.

I like the brass molds. Prefer them to aluminum although the weight is apparent. They drop bullets nicely and hold a constant temperature while casting.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I have a couple by Old West that cast as good or better than any other molds I own. I like them.

I have also used a couple of brass moulds.  Found them easy to use, dropped bullets readily.  I don't think you will need to get the pot that hot.

I have a couple of old west molds that are brass.  They are some of the easiest molds to cast well with, and come up to temperature pretty quick.  900 is way too hot, and I think I cast about 50 degrees cooler with the brass than with steel.  I shoot antimony lead, and just where it starts to show a frosted surface is where the brass casts best.  I think more like 680 to 720 degrees.

Only problem I have had with the brass is the lead smears/solders to the top of the blocks, I have to scrape it off occasionally and re-graphite it.

That would be my temp range, too, and once the sprue is set it doesn't smear. I cast with two moulds in rotation and the sprue is well set by the time it is the alternate mould's turn.

Speaking of brass molds, here's a Jim McLemore-"Pope" Universal brass mold from the 1980s. I've cast with the cavity shown and find it user friendly but unfortunately it casts bullets a bit small for any of my .32cal rifles. Fortunately, the handles are being fitted by Jason Brewer with two new sets of blocks for .32 and .38cal bullets as I write this. I'll be reporting on casting with this setup in the not too distant future (hopefully  Wink )
I've found the casting temperature sweet spot for this mold is 780˚F using 1:20 (tin:lead).

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

Met at the FFL today and got a bunch of goodies that came with the rifle, including  450 bullets already cast up, so I should be good to go for a little bit! It's always cool when a rifle comes with extra fun stuff!
