I took home a take down

My newest acquisition.  Winchester 1885 takedown in 25-35.
I also bought a Winchester High Wall takedown ring. This was made by F.W. Zika. It came with a Lyman #2 sight and is also shown with a Stevens 368 scope with Winchester A5 mounts.
I do plan on doing some refinishing to match the the forend and buttstock colors.

Jack if that rifle was originally a 25-35 it's probably pretty rare.  Is the serial number in the range where there are still factory records?  According to Bert H there were only 64 made in the period where there were factory records.  I imagine that cartridge was probably more popular in the later days though.

Pretty cool find, especially as a takedown.  I thought I had an original early one, but it turns out that it was originally a 38-55 Smiley

According to the chart at the Cody museum site there should be record of it.  I paid the $88 to order it but it will be late December before I could get it assuming it exists.  Here is the range that they have records for.  Mine is 108xxx.
IF (big if) it is original it may be the only 25-35 takedown made.  If so I could retire.  Oh wait, I am retired.

You could re-retire Jack, buy a big yacht and live aboard at Sequim WA. That John Wayne Marina is a nice one.

I am thinking Roche Harbor.  That is where my bride and I spent our honeymoon.

I spent a couple days and nights at Roche harbor. We tied up to a buoy and commenced to sorting things out on the boat before heading to town in the dingy. Here comes this young man standing up on a jet ski dressed in bermuda shorts a white sport coat and tie. Comes along side, good evening, will you be staying with us tonight? Yes I said, he says thats wonderful. The buoy is twenty dollars per night. Me being a long standing buoy bandit I just stared at him. The more I stared the bigger his smile got so I finally bellerd below to the galley wench, did you bring any cash with you?! We're being held up!! What a classy place. They really put on the ritz. It was so wonderful we paid whatever they wanted. Fond memories. I don't know about living there as it's on the backside of no where. Sequim is the place you oughta be. Chinese food, nice weather. Lots of things to do. Great fishing all around that area. Neah Bay. If you collect and restore old Ford pickups there used to be a couple three wrecked Ford pickups in every yard there. Native American reservation. Oh the memories. Makes me want to go back there.

There used to be quite a single shot rifle group of people in the area. Yes I did spend time there and it is a wonderful place. Where I lived rainfall was 40-70 inches a year. Sequim 45 miles away with its 17 inches of rain. So nice, when the rain got to you, you could be at Sequim having lunch outside in a little over an hour.

Now that I have you ready to move to Sequim on your forty five foot Cheoy Lee double ender we must get back to that Winchester 1885 25-35 takedown rifle. Your future happiness may depend on that Cody letter. Oh the agony!

A little reminder, yacht life, no lawn to mow, no leaves....

Crabs are good. When I was a kid they were so inexpensive our ‘cheap’ dinner was toasted English muffins With crab and cheese. Got to get moving and scrape  the barnacles of the yacht and varnish the teak.

Back to the rifle.
I had a conversation with Bert Hartman from the Winchester Arms Collectors Assn and here is what he initially said:
Quote:
This rifle started out as a 32-40 with a 30″ octagon barrel, but it made at least two trips back to the factory.  If you would be willing, take the forend stock off and take a clear picture(s) of all the markings found on the bottom of the barrel and send them to me

He said that he knows of at least 6 other takedown 25-35s.  There goes the yacht.  I may just get a rowboat.

Ballards may be weaker,

Or you may end up building up a two barrel set with your other takedown mechanism! Two barrel 1885's have got to be pretty rare and desirable too!

I am going to look for a gunsmith that is familiar with installing takedown barrels.  A 32-40 and 25-35 set would be nice for ISSA matches.

Yours came out like mine.  It was a 38-55 Sad.  If it was an original it would have been a real early one.

Just as well for mine.  I don't have any real use for a 38-55.  I might put a 38-50RH barrel on it, or maybe I'll finally use the RKS 32-40 barrel I've had here a while.
