Original Scope Blocks?

Here are the barrel markings on a 1909 manufactured High Wall.  Time to get out my Campbell's book but looks like th eblocks were factory installed.  Both blocks have the Winchester dimple on both sides.

Jack, while back I bought two scope blocks with screws that the seller said were from an original Ballard 6 1/2. I thought it odd he would include that in the description. To me blocks are blocks and almost all work.
So today I tried to mount them on a project rifle. The screw spacing is correct but the screws will not go in the 6X48 screw holes. The screws are about .005 bigger than all my other screws. Pitch looks the same.  Oversize 6X48s? Splain that to me.   Undecided

Oh, nice Winchester close ups. I can imagine the rest of it's perty neat.

I will have to remove them today and check the screws. I plan on installing some standard blocks and use my new Lischert scope.  Depending on how it shoots I might use my Stevens 368 with Winchester A5 mounts.  Maybe I can look for an A5 tube and make it look like it did when it was born in 1909.

The bad news is that the screws are not 6-48 but are 6-something.  The good news is that a 6-48 screw while slightly wiggly in the barrel holes will tighten up OK.  The other bad news is that the scope blocks are wider than standard, measuring .475 instead of .465. The best news is that I had exactly one set of dual blocks in the standard width and the exact height as the wide blocks so that the original screws can be used.  The slightly bad news is that the finish on the screws is lighter than the blocks that I had, but they can be touched up.  I now have a set of blocks installed that will work with my A5 blocks or my Wollensak  scopes or any of my standard Lyman or Unertl scopes.
Did you get all that?

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Nobody will see the screw heads once a scope is covering them.

Is that a # 1 or #2 barrel, Jack? Finally, a rifle you can hold up.

Just make sure there is enough thread engagement to get a good snug tighten. Under recoil underside threads even with a snug fit can wash out the existing threads. I had a barrel once with the same condition but these were correct at 6-48 just a bit looser. I ordered some oversize 6-48 and they fit perfectly. I have a 1894 in 25-35 and have always wanted a single shot in that caliber. Maybe one day I can find me an orphan hi wall action and build me one.

The thread engagement is perfect with the original screws.  With these blocks, there is no need to ever take them off.

Close Calledflyer, but no cigar (causes cancer in Canadian mice).  #3 weight but only 26"

Joe, there was a old screw standard that used a 9/64 screw. It's almost .141 diameter.

I have a sticky in "General Discussion › Useful topics combined in one header" that gives most of the old standard screw sizes.

Hi Frank. The screws from the Ballard #6 1/2 will start in 6x48 holes but only make about one turn. They measure .137. My 6x48s measure .130. Must be oversize 6x48s is what I figure.
