I'm refinishing my Model 70 stock. How do I reproduce that Winchester red color?

If you're trying to duplicate the Winchester model 70 finish, Winchester used a tinted paste filler like the old Herters French red and then sprayed with a semi-gloss lacquer. Later Winchester Model 70's (late fifties) will have a browner toned filler thnn the Herters French red. I haven't used the new French red but have used the old Herters original French red. It's hard on checkering tools though. There used to be stains called Tapadera N35 and also Pilkington's red but I don't know if they're available anymore . You might also try mixing some Minwax Black Walnut with some Minwax Red Oak to get the right color.

If you are looking for the Pre-64 Winchester Red color, I have used this Galazan (Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing Company) kit in the past with excellent results. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if Galazan is still making it or not or where some might still be in stock. Regards, Chris

Maybe too late for the original poster, but I've successfully used Cabot Stains "Gunstock" stain (on a Savage 99A and a High Wall) and it has very pleasing tones of the "red" you seek.

Got to digging around and I found some Min-wax "gunstock" color stain that looks promising. Of course I don't have enough, but I can test it and if good can buy more in town. To mail order stain quickly makes it $50 a can; when the'll mail it. A local fix would be preferred. Thanks

What ever Winchester put on that stock in the 90's, sure did not weather well, so silly me thought it would come off easy enough. That was not the case. Looks like a colored varnish or poly. It eats paint stripper and asks "may I please have more, sir?" I've been a scraping, stripping and scraping for quite a while now. Haven't  gotten around to staining yet.

After it's stripped try wood bleach on the stock to see if that draws out the color. Need to use wood bleach outdoors and wear a respirator as it's oxalic acid and can be dangerous indoors and without a respirator.
Could also try steel wool and acetone, but have to keep it wetted and work fast as it evaporates fast.

If you slather Acetone on the stock and use a razor blade for a scraper that stuff will come right off. On the checkering likewise but use a bronze brush. I don't mind the smell but then again I have few brain cells left.

Guys, I live in Alaska. It is 30 below, wait I exaggerate. It warmed up to 20 below today. I'll not be working outside for months.
When it comes to brain cells, I work on the buffalo herd theory. Wolves circle the herd, and pray on the sick and the weak. The same is true of chemicals and brain cells. They kill brain cells alright, but like wolves they only get the sick and the weak.
My wife the nurse however really raises hell when she catches me huffing, or casting in the house. I have to have the air clean before she comes home from work. An open window and a fan are not the hot tip this time of year either. What to do, what to do?
