How much to oil an old stock?

How much and how often do you folks put oil your stocks for preservation? I'm not looking to 'refinish' any of my original stocks but just to keep them clean and in good shape. Also what do you use (old English lemon oil, raw linseed oil, bolden oil, etc..)?

Thanks
-Dave

Depends on what the current finish is.

For old military rifles (the kind with real wood on them) I have a mixture of beeswax, parafin, and linseed oil.  Old oil finishes True Oil will usually work and can be removed if not.  SC Johnson Paste Wax,  Old English Wood Furniture Lemon Oil Protecting Polish, etc.

In short, I don't think there is a one size fits all solution.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, why do we have captions?

Hi Dave,

Like others have said. I guess it depends on what is on your stock now.

I use a product called "Feed-N-Wax" Wood Polish and Conditioner made by  Howard Products Inc., Paso Robles, Komiefornia. 93446
It is a combination of Beeswax, Carnauba wax and Orange Oil.

They have a whole line of wood care products on their web site.

As to how often, I keep a small 2 oz. bottle of it on the shelf in my safe along with a dedicated tack cloth, Just about every time I put a gun back in the safe I give it wipe down... Wood and metal so that no finger print oils remain.

Good Stuff and smells great... Only downside is my better half knows where I've been.

I wipe them down only if I've taken them out to shoot, or display. And for over 35 years I've used Old West Snake Oil on both metal and wood. A few drops on an old rag is all that's needed to bring the beauty out in metal and wood.

I've only bought two bottles and both were at gun shows. But you can order direct from them. I think they're in Loveland, Co.?

I've always bought the Original. I keep my rag in a ziplock baggie so it just takes a few drops added each time. More than a few drops is wasted and will leave the guns oily. You'll be amazed how it enhances both metal and wood finishes.

IMO, Renaissance Wax is as close to a universal preservative/enhancer as you'll find regardless of the finish. As a micro-crystalline compound it's tough/long lasting - not ephemeral in nature like Snake Oil and other proprietary products that depend on mineral oil as a prime ingredient. I learned of it through a friend who's a conservator at the Smithsonian, it's their go-to wood elixir.
