what should be next for me?

I am now 74 and still enjoy shooting but hunting is in my past now.
I have a Savage 72 Crackshot
a Browninng 1885 45/70
a Ruger #1 in .204
an Anschutz 54 22lr with peep sights.
I am open to recommendations for my next single shot rifle for some fun shooting.
PS- I"m kind of a fan of straight walled calibers.
and considering the 32 H&R mag unless someone has a better preference.

A Ballard.  both a 22 rf and a CF, probably a 32-40 or a 38-55

Can't go wrong with 32-40. I shot out the barrel on mine, and am going to have it re done to 25-35 when I can. I plan on getting another rifle in 32 in the future.  I'd like a Ballard,  but a nice Winchester or Steven's wouldn't hurt

I will be 78 next week, was I supposed to stop hunting when I was 74?

Well  granted, I do have a deer lease and sit a deer blind all day now.  I'm still hunting.

Last Medicare appointment the Doctor was asking the Medicare questions, and one was, "where would you like to be at the end of your time? "

I said, "sitting in the deer blind".

He said he was going to put that down.

Wife lets me go out as long as I don't turn my phone off, so she can find me on  Life360.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I'm 75 and stopped carrying a rifle and hunting deer about 5 years ago. But I pack my handgun and tag along on the walks every fall with the younger guys still. No desire anymore to drag dead deer, or do all the hard parts, but I just love still being out in the fall and looking for deer for someone to shoot and pack.

I am kind of partial to Stevens 44 1/2's myself. A .32-40 is traditional, but a 44 1/2 certainly could be barreled and chambered in  .32 H&R if that's what you want for a cartridge.

I agree with the 32-40 response's. It's a fun cartridge with hardly no recoil and very accurate. Hepburn, Win. 1885, Ballard, Stevens 44 1/2. Take your pick. Can't go wrong with either one.  Dale.

I'll echo the .32-40 responses too, and will throw out .32 Miller and .32RKS into the mix. I will say though that the long .32 handgun cartridges are very appealing also. The older I get the less I'm enchanted with getting the bejapers knocked out of me by big calibers. .32 H&R or .327 Federal may well be the next path for me as a second barrel for the 44 1/2, or in an orphan cast Ballard receiver (with the barrel marked as ".32 extree long" or somesuch to dissuade future users from doing something erroneous).

Deer hunting is still on my plate but I don't strike off on long walkabouts anymore. Last weekend in Kentucky I guarded the trees with my Ruger 1A 6.5x55, and (almost) sighed with relief that I didn't have to deal with 150 pounds of dead beast. It's all fun and games until the echo of the shot dies away.....

I'm a tad older but your comment really resonates with me. Funny how after years of hunts and gut piles a person kind of slips into being more of an outdoor observer than a tag filler. I still like my meat but perhaps like you just happy having a seat in the theater. I honestly actually see, hear and smell more around me in the woods these days. But to be perfectly honest at my age and orthopedic condition the prospect of field dressing and packing out an elk or good size Muley is about my limit or more

At the end of the day all that matters is staying in the shooting game at some level.

When they lay me out I bet my RH index finger will still be a-twitching.

I guess I am very lucky, be 82 in 30 days. I still hunt deer, but pass up everything but a good buck, so I haven’t filled my tag the last 2 years. I still love to get out on a cold morning before dawn and watch all the other wildlife while waiting for that buck. I hunt alone, just don’t get to far from the road. I use a game cart and load the carcass with a come along to drag it up a ramp into the bed of my truck.

The older you get the fancier your gun should be. Finest wood, impeccable wood to metal fit, profuse engraving, 24 LPI checkering, the very best of everything. It should really shine and attract attention, even if your shooting doesn't.

Ditto
At my advanced age, I don't worry about how good I do, but how good I look doing it.  Smiley
Like Westerner suggested, my last couple purchases were based on quality of the wood; checkering, and fit and finish.  Cool

It's enjoyable, and even a bit humorous now to watch the young guys each morning and recall being the same way back years ago. All excited to be getting ready each day, and wolfing down coffee and donuts before rushing out. Then stalking, or watching areas for every little movement. Sitting behind any of them, or walking along with them gives me as much or more enjoyment than I had when I was filling tags myself.
And should somebody actually get a buck I'm as happy as they are just to see everyone celebrating and congratulating the lucky hunter. There's nothing like hunting, and I'm happy towards the last couple decades I hunted to have done so with my old rifles. Those were the best hunts of my life.
