Breech Seting Practices - The Civil war starts

So what's the current thinking about breech seating smokeless powder.  In the old days shooting my 32-40 in the back 40 after inserting the boolit I would charge a case, hold the rifle vertically, insert the case, tap the hand-guard a couple of times to settle the powder, aim and fire.  Most ranges frown on rifles point straight up.  What's the current thinking retaining powder in the shell?  fiber wad, pufflon, tissue paper, nothing, etc?  What's the current thinking about chamber ringing

Thanks

I use nothing in 32-40 length cases and either floral foam or something similar with shorter cases just to prevent powder spillage. I have never pointed the rifle up.
Just my take on it.  There have been quite a few threads on this topic here

Using long cases like the 32-40, you don't need any wads unless you are using black powder and filling the case. I settled on 14gr of 300mp and accuracy never suffered

Below is an illustration showing how smokeless powder slumps forward when a .32-40 cartridge case is charged with a "standard" powder charge of approximately 14.0gr of IMR 4227. I have run this test time after time using various smokeless powders and the results of how the powder slumps forward are always similar the the illustration. Adding an over-powder wad (of whatever material) only adds an additional variable and negatively affects accuracy IMO.
Raising the muzzle vertical has no effect in how much the powder slumps forward when lowered to the horizontal axis in my tests.
Loading and shooting Schuetzen rifles with smokeless powders is thoroughly detailed in my book Loading and Shooting Traditional American Schuetzen Rifles.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

When loading my Borchardt 32-40 and 35-40 I use a floral foam wad in the mouth of the case. Keeps the powder in the case and in the 32-40 shrunk groups.

A rifle can be pointed straight up, a loaded shell inserted in the chamber then set back on the bags without closing the action. Floral foam wads make loading easy.
