Stuck it all together this morning and test fired it in the afternoon. Everything checked out. Had some old duplex loads from 30 + years ago. LOUD!   Shocked  It will wake the dead. Showing the good side of that forestock.

Accurate? Don't know. Will find out at the match next weekend.

Looks like a nice early flat side action build Joe! Must be a pretty low serial number?

Four digit. Second year? Started out was going to pull the barrel and squirrel the action away. But first ran some patches through the bore and saw right away it had rifling. Bore turned out to be in decent shape. I got it as a barreled action with the forestock still attached. Had enough parts to make a rifle out of it. Barrel is Winchester marked 40-90SS but is now 45-90. 8 groove 18 twist. Re-crowned the muzzle. Looked like it took a pounding with a hammer. Firing pin was broken and the trigger adjustment screw is broken off. Trigger works good so left it alone. If the rifle is innacurate will most likely make a 35-40 breech muzzleloader out of it.
Yes a thick side action and it's uglier than anything Jack has.  Grin

Sometimes it pays to put your glasses on and take a closer look.

I think it's a rare enough action and old enough that it's been there and shows it's heavy use and neglect. Not many heavy sided High Walls found that are in great shape, or haven't been restored.

If the rest of the screws are as good as the one on the right for the tang it's probably been stuffed in a corner somewhere a lot more than ever used and abused. I rather like the thing, Jose'.
Is there a keyway on the barrel for a sight? That tang sight is so new that it hurts the rest of the rifle. Take is off and drop it into a glass full of tomato juice. when it matches the gun, take it out  add some salt and pepper, and drink it down. No use wasting good juice. Add vodka if you want.

The sight is borrowed off another rifle. I have sights that match the rifle but no sight settings. If it turns out to be a barn burner I'll install the old windgauge tang sight.
All the screws are in excellent shape. Except that trigger screw. The firing pin broke then someone stuck it in a  basement in Vernal Utah and forgot about it. For a long long time.

Ugly is as ugly does. Or something like that.  If they shoot well they ain’t so ugly. Just like a woman.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. I think that old warhorse is gorgeous. I like the flecked mottled finish and the dated look.

Shot prone off cross stix, no wind flags. 200 yards, 70 gr Swiss 1 1/2, VF wad, 520 grain 457-125 bullet. Old experiminkle ammo.
Rifle weighs 10 pounds 3 ounces. Kicks and is very LOUD. I may have had a little viggle in my vaggle.
Next load will be 63 gr Swiss 1 1/2 under a 480 grain spitzer bullet. Needs tamed down a little. Think I may have a loose tooth.  Undecided

I shot 83gr of Swiss 1.5 behind a 535gr postel for our match yesterday.  Was the most accurate load I've used at range so far, but I'm feeling it today
