bullet for CPA 38-50 silhouette rifle

A while ago I bought a CPA silhouette rifle with a 3 barrel set ( 38-50RH, 30-40, 32-40 ).

I have a Buffalo Arms 360gr Money bullet  (BACO377360M4).  The rifle doesn't like it.  Rarely it'll shoot semi-tolerable groups but mostly big ugly ones.  I suspect the nose isn't well supported in the 1.5 degree leade.

The one that it likes is too light and stubby to be competitive at distance.  It's the Hoch 377310.  This bullet clearly shows that the rifle will shoot well, but I need something heavier and I'd prefer a better B.C.   This morning it put 9 shots into just under a minute of angle at 200m, with OE 1.5 black powder.

Any bullet suggestions for those of you with the same chamber on your rifles?

Chris.

In my CPA 38-50 I shoot a 360 grain Paul Jones micro groove (on the right). The long unsupported nose requires a harder 1 to 16 alloy to avoid nose slump. I'm guessing a Money bullet would need that harder alloy also. I also have a 360 grain Old West NASA II mono groove (on the left). which would also require the 1 to 16 alloy. Bernie Rowles at Old West can make one of these to your specifications.

What is the length of the PJ bullet if I might ask?  I have tried 16:1 and even 14:1 with the Baco Money with the same results. I've had excellent results with 16:1 and money bullet in all of my silhouette and BPTR rifles.  Just not this one yet.

Does your CPA have their chamber or a custom one? This rifle has quite a shallow leade (1.5 degrees per side) which is different than the more popular Dan T. chamber a lot are using.

thanks,

Chris.

The PJ bullet is 1.398 in length. The chamber is standard CPA. My load is 51.5 grains of Swiss 1.5, funnel dumped, .060 Walter's poly wad, and bullet is seated out so compression is essentially 0. Barrel is 13 twist Douglas and bullet is sized .379 and lubed with White Lightning.

Hello Chris,

What is the twist of your 38-50?

Cheers

Hi Rick!

It's a 1:12 twist Douglas.  I should have mentioned this in my original message.   I suspect that the long Money bullet I have might be slumping due to imperfect alignment.  I'm going to do another test next week, depending on the weather.  I forgot about a mold that I picked up a long time ago, and maybe it'll work.  It's a 355gr PJ elliptical.   The only odd thing about it is the nose is 0.880" long and the driving bands only 0.570" so it's mostly nose.

I'm also not certain whether all CPA rifles have the same chambers.  I was looking at the specs on one of the bullets Arnie Seitz designed for the CPA and it looks like it's set up for a 3 degree (per side) leade.  Mine should be 1.5 per side with a 0.050" freebore, based on the reamer print that Gail sent me when I ordered the rifle.

I haven't tried neck tension with the Money bullet as I don't have  a seater that fits the nose profile. I'd like to see how it does with 0.001" neck tension as I have a few rifles that like that.  At the moment I'm slip fitting in Hornady brass as the bullet is a tight slip fit in that.
