value for a German Schuetzen rifle?

Someone I know is looking to get rid of a martini style action (color cased with NO engraving) with the takedown barrel lever on the right side. The action has all of the finish. Now the bad:
1) the plain wooded butt stock has been cut down for length and and 2 inches of new LoP added and a poorly fit plate.
2) 8.15 x 46R bore is in VG to excellent condition
3) the barrel is fluted but looks like a more recent well done job.
4) looks like original rear sight fitted with a Merit disc.
5) front base is there but fitted with a more modern globe.

Is $1,000 high, low or normal?

I was thinking to get it up and running as a club gun for newly interested shooters to use. Is 8.15 x 46R difficult to get components for and to get shooting reasonably?

Thank you,
Charles

A grand is high.  A nice Aydt sold here a short while back for $800.  Yes, it was good deal, but that's what it takes to sell one these days - good deals.

Now for the good news:  8.15x46R is easily made from .30-30 or  .32 Win special.  Just run either into an 8.15 sizing die.

Make a chamber cast and get a sense of the length, trim the cases to something a bit long, and then fire form a couple to get an accurate length and start trimming.

You can get a ring stop bullet mold from Buffalo Arms (or WTB advertise here) and the loading is really simple.

I would agree with smoke, I am no expert, but I do own and shoot several. $1000 is too high for a rifle that has the stock butchered and non original sights. The take down is plus. I would guess the fluting is original.

I did a little digging and you guys are right. So I will let him send it to the auction house and see what it goes for. And, I don't need another caliber.
Thank you for the input,
Charles

If you shoot one of these things, it isn't necessary to get all hung up on stop-ring bullets.  I have an old one (made before the 1891 required markings) that does just fine with 311403 seated ahead of that weird throat.

Not terribly fussy about brass, either.

But unless it's a dandy, 1 K is at least twice what it will bring.

What happens if a guy sends his rifle to an auction house and it does not sell?

In my so-far limited experience. the rifle is either returned to the consignor or held over for the next suitable auction but at a lower preestimate.  In either case, the auction house will be owed some money for trying.
