Very nice old piece. I like the oval cut in the top of the receiver. I think I will incorporate one in my current build. Thanks for the pictures...

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Only  done on .22RF Ballards. I wouldn't weaken my action by doing a RF concave top.

I dont think I would weaken my action either just for the look. But Marlin did have a small block of concave top forged actions. We had this conversation a few hears ago. I know of 4 like this and they were close in SN so theyres pry a few more. Maybe a mistake made but they still barreled them and sent them out. And after all these years theyre still going.

Just bought a gun of Joe’s so I know he has money even after buying this one. Offer up those nice guns to him. I need him to fill his gun room so he has to put some more up for sale.
Very nice Ballard.

My gun is a 22 . One of Rodney's last run of kits. Pretty sure it is 8620 material. Do you still advise against it?

If it's a .22RF then no problem. Early JM Marlin marked Ballard rifles had flat top receivers because they had heavy barrels. But when Marlin changed to the light barrels on the #3 and #3F they did the concave cut to be able to see the sights.
So it depends on which era you want to emulate in your build? Personally I'd still leave it flat top if you're installing a #3 weight barrel, and only concave the top if your plan is a similar lightweight barrel.
