That is a very nice looking, clean ZAR rifle. Should be a  good shooter.

I wonder how that dent in the muzzle occurred.

That dent across the muzzle sure looks like it could
have been
intentional
Too bad, for such a nice Martini

I suppose the "dent" could have been an intentional try at disabling the rifle as a shooter.  On the other hand, someone swings a sword at me and I push whatever I've got in his face.

If Joe didn't take all of my money, this would be on the way to me. Love to have a ZAR to go with other British guns of the era.

I am the lucky new owner of the ZAR and I plan to shoot it.
I already load for that Caliber . I have a couple Of BSA models .
I am thinking of slicing off the last 3/16 “ of it. I have plenty of tools that will do the job ,and having it recrowned .  Any Ideas ?

Westley Richard’s. A name you don’t see often.
I have a Westley Richard’s Bullard large frame repeater in 45/70.

I think that's the only way you could shoot it. In the spirit of keeping the barrel it's true length and any patina intact, try putting an aggressive recessed crown on it. Swiss rifles like the vettterli series and my milbank amslers have very such crowns

Ballards may be weaker,

Your gun, but I wouldn't take off any more than it needs to remove the gouge at the crown. I'd think it would take much less than 3/16" to clean it off.

Thanks for the advice , 3/16 was just an estimate and I agree to remove just enough to get rid of the Damage . It is still in transit so  I will know better when I have it in hand . Thanks
