Target rifle? Bear gun?

According to the auction description it is. Better be if I ever shoot a bear with it.
The barrel is octagon to round so not, I'm assuming won't be an issue bore. So the person who put this together planned to shoot bears and didn't want to miss so added a strap with a modern Lyman peep sight on it. Seems queersome to me. Still a neat rifle.

I like the octagon to round barrel. That's a classy touch. I am sure the bear wouldn't care but classy still...

Yes, it is rather queer. Maybe someone was looking for a gay old time hunting.

Not that kind of queersome. Mighty queersome, mountain man talk. That grizzly bear only had three legs! He looked mighty queersome!
This sight has been waiting a long time for a place to land. Might look right on the bear gun.

I think that sight would be a nice upgrade. The existing is butt ugly.

It’s a very useful hunting rifle. One I’d like to own.
I have similar, a locally built mix of new barrel, original and new parts, new stock, 58 caliber Artillery Rifle, it’s shorter than an infantry rifle. Very effective sighted for 75 yards for deer to 100 yards . Weak point mine are the original sights. it’s easy to shoot high making fast shots on moving deer. Be much better with a arpeture rear.
All I would do to the one pictured is change the rear to a simple arpeture and wide blade front filed to zero desired distance.

When I look at it, makes me want to go bar huntin.
Might be able to see a barrel sight. The rifle would look correct with a barrel sight. Might have an express sight around here somewhere. Mike Otterberg says it's a bonified bear gun.

Looks just like the one my dad put together minus that sight in the 1960's for deer hunting in Michigan. He took a lot of whitetails with it. It was .58 cal.

The rifle is out of the Russell Dickerman estate. Think he was in New Hampshire.
