Most scope bases are made from mild steel and the case hardened.

Jack you should come down and see me, I can can machine the bases you need

I've never really understood why target scope bases needed to be so darn hard?

Same here Vall. Some of my bases won't anneal. Don't know what they're made of. Leaded steel makes excellent scope bases and do not require a round cut in them.

Plastic bases should hold up to recoil when Unertl/Lyman style scopes are used. Plastic on a nice single shot rifle?

When Jack mentioned filament I thought maybe 3D printed bases could be made from steel or some sort of pot metal. Internet search seems to indicate it is possible.

Most I have are blued, but a small number are color cased finish. I assume that any of them can be annealed to make them easier to machine or drill and then hardened again?

The 3D printed base issue is only theoretical in the specific use that got me thinking about it because I don’t think the owner of a .22 Pope barrel would like a plastic block on it. Ya think!

That's why I thought the 3D printing idea was interesting. I have a Zischang highwall that at some point was drilled and tapped for Stevens bases with the different spacing and smaller screw size.  Not being a machinist has its disadvantages.

There are internet 3D printing sites that distribute code for various objects.  I will do some sleuthing.  If I ever think of getting a printer I need to do some serious rearranging in my inner shop that is heated. It can take hours to print things.
Wes, printing in metal is beyond the capability of most printers. A quick search turned up a cheap one for $35K with two others over 100 grand. That would take lots of scope blocks to pay for it.  Maybe make Ballards!

Poking around on the link I posted, saw the word "sintered". Hmm, anyway they will sell you a machine and a roll of wire at about 500.00 bucks a roll.

No, scope blocks are just to darn easy to make even on a import bench top mill or a milling attachment on a lathe.

A nice Tormach CNC mill would be nice.
If I had and talent there are instructions and/or parts to convert my Grizzly mill to CNC. Probably cost a grand to buy the parts plus the cost of software.

With your money buy a machine shop and have your employees make scope blocks for you.

The coefficient of expansion for plastic is much higher than steel or aluminum. Just wondering if that would change sight settings during a match?
Are you crazy? NO, you're just trying something new.
