front bag recommendation CPA benchrest

Hi,

I've had this CPA with benchrest forearm ( single prong Schoyen buttstock ) for a long time and I've never had a proper front bag.  I have a Caldwell Rock BR front rest.  Would a 3" owl ear Protektor or 3" square Protektor bag be a good choice?  The forearm is about 2-3/4" wide on mine.

thanks,

Chris.

unusual configuration- sorta half and half.
I can't say how, or if a change of rest would work out for that rifle, but just want to mention that almost all of my single shot, or other two-piece stocked rifles have responded very well to rests out on the barrel- often near the muzzle. All that I have owned lacked a barrel hanger, and that may change things.
So, maybe give it a whirl and if it works replace or rework that forend and get the piece one style from end to end Roll Eyes

This one should work.  1/2 the prie of the Edgewood bags.

I'd go with a Protektor #3

For that big honkin forestock you need a squeezer bag. I see you have squeeze capability in your rest.

Beautiful wood, by the way.

Thanks everyone.

Joe I've had that rifle for maybe 9 or 10 years I think.  It's a 3 barrel set and I've mostly used the .22LR and 32-40 barrels with traditional stocks.  At the time I ordered it I was doing a lot of experimenting with 38-55 paper patched bullets and black powder.  CPA had just brought in a bunch of English Walnut and happened to have an RKS gain twist 38 cal barrel on hand so I ordered that with a benchrest forearm.  I shot with that barrel a couple of times and then put it away.  The other day I was thinking that it was a shame to have a fine Ron Smith barrel sitting around unused.  I plan on giving it a try with IMR-4227 and the Hoch 376310 bullet which some of my other 38-55's like a lot.

It sure is nice to shoot with a benchrest forearm.   Today I shot the first smokeless loads through that barrel, but resting the wide forearm on a loosely packed rear bag so a little less than ideal.

At 100m it put 5 shots into 1/2" and at 200m I scored a 245-5c.  I was a little off center with the first few shots and didn't pay much attention to the wind flags so improvements should come easily.

Once I get the new front bag it might help a bit too Smiley.

Chris:

I used the Edgewood front sandbag.
Rigid/Stong; providing a flat surface to slide on, after compacting sand to fill her up.
She consistently provided direct inline recoil for my rifles with flat bottom forearms.
Previously I used the Bald Eagle but it wore out and was not quite as solid as the Edgewood.

I used the Bald Eagle rear bag which is much more solid than the Caldwell bags.

Thanks Dave!

I actually don't shoot that much with the rear bag in the picture.  I have a Protektor that is nice and solid with a really flat bottom to it.

I attached my rear bag to a piece of 1/2” plywood with wood screws at each corner and glued a mouse pad to the bottom nice and flat and anti slip.

I glued non-slip antiskid router mat onto the bottom of my Bald Eagle rear bag with contact cement.

Chris,
In the past I used sand that you could pick up at the big box stores to fill the bags, a while ago I bought a 50# pail of Garnet for my bead blast cabinet.  Compared to sand or glass beads by volume the stuff seemed extra heavy.  On a whim I compared it to some heavy fill sand we'd bought special for our run-and-gun comp bags, it's the same stuff.  At a local Tractor Supply here they sell that bucket for $35, it works very well for bench bags.  If you can find the alluvial garnet vs crushed garnet there's less dust and seems to conform better.
My 5¢ worth of semi-relevent info.
