Rem. No. 2 date by serial number?
Oct 12th, 2025 at 4:17pm
Print Post
I recently acquired a Rem. No. 2 rolling block in 32-20 and would like to figure out when it was manufactured.
The serial number is 321XX

Thanks for any information.

Remington did not maintain a record of #2 sporting serial numbers by date of manufacture.  Your rifle can be aged by date bracket by examining the features, stampings and furniture on each individual rifle.  Look up a copy of Marcot's book on the RB sporting rifles.  Chapter 14 is as good a place to start as exists.

Thanks. I figured I was not going to be too successful, but if anyone knew, it would be someone here or on the Remington Collector's site.

I'd be happy for an educated guess about date (i.e. pre- or post-1898? etc. or a five-year span of likely manufacture)

The rollstamps on the barrel and various markings are better to use to date a #2 Rolling Block. John Gyde's book on Remington .22 rifles has very complete info on the various rollstamps used during different time periods. If you post all the markings I'll see what his great book says about dates for yours.

Thanks!

Barrel stamp is one line "Remington Arms Co. Ilion, NY"
Caliber stamp is "32 W"
Has the lightly stamped patent dates on the left side of the receiver
SN 321XX in line with the tang

That makes it post 1888, but I can't get closer than 1889-1909. The post bankruptcy rifles are tough to date. The 1872-1888 guns are easier to date with various rollstamp changes.

Off topic but has the guy that was buying these and converting RF cases posted in a while? Figured he would post here. He was thinking of writing a book.

ETA. ndnchf was on here 10/4/25

Sorry for the hijack.

I've been researching and gathering #2 data for a number of years. It is a murky business. Ive gathered data on well over 150 #2s and have a running timeline of features and changes. There is a fair bit if conjecture, but I can generally date a rifle to a decade after reviewing all of its features.

You might find my overview video of the #2 rifle of interest.
