58 CF rolling block

I just picked up an early rolling block conversion in 58 CF yesterday at auction.  Haven't received it yet, but I had a question about an "XX" stamp on the top of the receiver.  Any insights?

Curious as to what 58 cal. center fire you may have in the Roller.
The only one I can think of would be maybe the .577 Snider.

That is an odd marking. I thought all the .58's were rimfire. on the positive side if it is a .577 Snyder you can get brass from track of the wolf and that might work for a converted to centerfire .58 as well. XX could mean either 20th regiment or taken out of service, but most unit markings are on the side or comb of the buttstock. It's a definite mystery.

Apparently they are either .58 Roberts or .58 Musket, just gotta measure the chamber length.

Nice, are the case dimensions close enough to use the Snyder brass?

I have a few. They are chambered .58 Berdan.  A friend in OR sent me one chambered .58 Roberts.  Have not seen one in any other caliber

I have 20 pcs of NEW Ballard Rifle & Cartridge, LLC
58 US Musket I would sell if it will work in your Rifle.
These are true "EVERLASTING" cases machined from solid brass.

Its certainly no tackdriver. But with work it can shoot well for what it is.

Thanks for all the responses!  I finally got the rifle and it has a nice bore.  I can clearly see the transition from the chamber to rifling, and it measures at about 1.4" so I believe that's a Roberts, if I'm not mistaken.

Nineteen76, I saw your post. Looks nice, but a bit rich for my cheap blood! Plus, I believe yours might be too long?  I'm gonna do Magtech 24 gauge brass.

Way back in 2013 I chronicled my .58 Roberts load development over on the cascity forum. You might find it of interest.

This is one next to a .22 short.

Thanks, ndnchf! So you landed on using a minie? Looks like your target says .594" diameter?

I am trying to source a Lyman minie mold.  There are several out there on eBay but none have the base pin.  Thinking of calling Lyman but I have my serious doubt they'll have one.

Doesn't Lee make some with a fixed pin? I use one for a 45-70 405gr HB and it works great.

They do and I may end up doing that.  I just heard that the Lyman was better.

Yes .594"  I sent a stock Lyman minie mold off to Hollow Point Molds and had it enlarged to match groove diameter. This greatly improved accuracy.
