Micrometer adjustable powder compression die

Since I load for two .40-65 rifles, sometimes with different bullets for each rifle & do a good bit of experimenting, I spend a good bit of time tweaking a standard powder compression die.  I realize that for repeated loading I could measure the length the stem sticking out of the top of the die with a vernier caliper and write that down for each bullet and load which would be a no-cost simple solution.  But since I experiment a lot I desired a micrometer adjustable compression die.  Since no one makes one that I could identify, I built one relatively cheaply from existing available parts - total cost $33.97 + shipping.  See the following photo.  It works great.

BTW, Lee makes 3 different micrometers.  The difference being the length of the stem inside.  Only the handgun version will work for this application.  Lee's powder through expander die comes with a factory powder through plug which is replaced with the Track of the Wolf powder compression plug.  Track of the Wolf sells powder compression plugs for .38, .40 & .45 calibers.  They are all made to fit the Lee .45-70 powder through expander die.

Great setup.  Thanks for passing along this idea.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Looks like a nice setup, and sure reasonably cheap to build! Thanks.

I slightly modify RCBS powder drop micrometer (ie part #98901).  I turn the piston down to fit whatever caliber I need.  The micrometer has the same thread pitch as common RCBS die expander plugs (ie 458) and will screw right into place.
