Stock breakage?

In the topic re: problems with shipping via USPS, singleshotsam posted 3 photos of the stock on a High Wall broken by USPS.  This isn't a USPS rant, so I started a new topic.

Dredging up memories of factoids from a wood technology class back in 1967, I've looked at singleshotsam's posted photos many times.  Seems to me, that stock was going to fail sooner or later, and it might not take a huge amount of mishandling to bring about the break.  What say you?

If you are going to ship a rifle with a 2-piece stock - remove the the butt stock and pack securely.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

I don't see anything wrong with it other than being broken.

It may be that waterman sees that the break perfectly follows the flow of the grain down the wrist instead of through the wrist?

Yes I see that too. I don't see anything wrong with the grain in the wrist other than the stock being quarter sawed rather than board sawed.

Personally without abuse I doubt that stock was ever going to fail in normal use. Yes, high grade wood with lots of figure in it is easier to break than straight grain wood, but neither will survive abuse well.

I sent a high end 10 ga double barrel shotgun USPS to Missouri for stock replacement a couple months ago. Few days after it arrived the shop sent me a photo of the lower trigger guard as it was bent at the attachment screw hole to a 90 degree angle. The box end was very damaged also. Mind you the stock was removed and the barrel assembly was packed in foam rubber and bubble wrap with special attention on the receiver end. It was placed in a heavy wall box. He was able to heat and bend the guard back. I will never mail anything again unless it is in either an aluminum case or hard plastic.
