Paper patch lube

Just curious about one detail involving PP bullets.

The 1991 Paul Matthews book, The Paper Jacket, has a short 3-page section on lubrication, starting on page 89. He cites some home-made lubes.

After I wrap my Brooks .40-cal. smooth sided “slug”, I run the bullet through a RCBS 0.412” CB sizing die that has SPG lube in it.

The rifle is a CSA Model 74 Sharps, chambered in 40 cal. 2 1/2 (aka 40-70 SS). I plan to try a duplex load for the first time after (15) years of BP only.

So….. Is it “standard practice” to somehow lubricate a smooth sided paper surface? If so, how does that surface carry enough lube to do anything AND what commercial lube is a consideration?

Thanks!

Tom

Oakdale,
Some of us use light oil like jojoba oil on the exposed surface of the paper. Not enough to pass through the outer layer of paper. And others shoot them dry. Personally I get better groups at long range with lightly lubed paper and a dry bore.

I've never tried lubing the paper. I know some do, but I wouldn't consider it standard practice these days. I've only met only a couple of people that do it.

Like Tom I use the jojoba oil on the exposed patch. But that comes with the caveat it's something that you need to experiment with as some rifles really like it , others hate it.
I wet patch the bullets and don't bother with running patched bullet thru a sizer.
IMHO finding the diameter bullet before patching, paper thickness and patch width with the rifles preferred powder charge and wad stack is the most important steps in accurate paper patch loading. With very good fouling control

I store chase patches in a tin oiled with Jojoba, 3-1 any light oil. Best when the patches are saturated but not dripping wet.

The advantage of oil? I don't know. Can't hurt.

FWIW, slug gunners always used fully saturated vellum paper patches, using sperm oil.

When I started shooting slug guns, in 1988, the sperm oil was not available to me, even though they still had their stash of it so, the guys told me to use type F, automatic transmission fluid.

In the beginning of the automatic transmission era, in the early 40's, they used sperm oil for those transmissions so, AT fluid, is a replica of sperm oil.

With personal experience with lubing and not lubing paper patch projectiles. Using JoJo lube works outstandingly, tried whale oil. Not much luck with that. But JoJo oil increased the accuracy in two rifles, a 40-70 SS, and a 45-90.
Listen to Tom K. he has done tons of experiments, to increase his performance in this field!

I dry patch and push the 45 bullets through a .452” push through sizer. This doesn’t size, just irons on the patch. No lube on the patched bullet. I feel the residue from my wiping solution provides all the lubrication necessary. This has worked well for me for target loads in three rifles. When I experimented with lube it made no noticeable difference. However, it may in your rifle. It’s worth trying.
