Swedish m/1889 Rolling Blocks seeking life

Hello Gents,

I am an extremely new member of this forum, only having joined a few days ago and learning of its existence at the same time. I was routed your way by a guy from Facebook.

I am wanting to rebarrel a couple of Swedish m/1889 RBs that have welded up chambers. I have decided on one being 38-55WCF and the other caliber, that I am leaning heavily towards being, 40-62 WCF.

Can anyone help me with what might be some of the pitfalls and/or general guidance, for reloading 40-62WCF?

there is no .40-62 that I know of. perhaps you meant to type either .40-65 or .40-82?
there was a .40-60 as well, originally for the model of 1876, but that is not a likely choice.

Ahhhh you’re right. I had it flipped in my head. .40-65.

The Swedish Rolling Blocks are great actions and I've built up rifles in Sporting configuration with several Swede Roller actions. I have one I built in .40-65 also, and it's one of my favorites.
As for pitfalls there really aren't any. The military actions do have to have the extractor reworked generally as they're often for larger rims and need some tig welding and machining to make them work. If you plan to restock them also you'll need to make sure to order stock sets for a military as those tangs are wider and thicker, and lower tangs are shorter too.
You'll need to leave these actions as round tops as they are BP actions and wont have enough metal in the receiver ring to reshape to octagon top like later smokeless actions have.
This was my most recent Swede build that I also converted to a pistol grip stock. Another .40 caliber.

That’s a beauty!!!

I really want to turn mine into a pistol grip arrangement as well. I’d love to hear more about yours.

The 1889 conversions have a distinct advantage when chambering a new rifle barrel in any cartridge that uses the .45-70 case head.  The extractor that comes in the 8x58R is the same as the 40-65, 45-70, 45-90 etc. typically no need for any alteration.

That’s definitely good to know! I hadn’t checked, but I was hoping that the original 8x58 round was close enough to the 40-65 to not need anything altered on the extractor.

You can still buy brand new Remington pistol grip trigger guards at Numrich:

The rifle I built was done when Numrich still had factory stocks from Remington's 1997 run of Rolling Block Sporters, and they had both deluxe stocks sets, and standard stock sets. I got lucky and bought the last deluxe set they had in stock. I think they're out of all stock sets now, so you'd have to buy a semi inletted set to build now. George at Treebone Carving does them, as do some others. The top tang needs to be thinned in thickness and width to get to Sporting size.
My Roller has a 34" full octagon Green Mountain .40 caliber barrel, and is chambered in .40-50SS. Sights also came from Numrich and are a long range vernier tang sight, and windage globe front. Both original Remington parts.

Well, I guess I got burned on my post a little. I went to purchase one of those pistol grip trigger plates this morning and it appears the 3 they had in stock have been sold and probably by people who read this post.

I couldn't buy it at the time when I first saw it because I was ripping off a roof on my brother's cottage for two days.

So thanks to those people....

Well that's sad for me too! I guess any future builds I do will be straight grips like my early builds all were. But a straight grip looks good also, and you can buy a grip adapter to make them a little fancier. This was one of my earliest builds I did decades ago.

I added this "horn" adapter later to just make it feel better when shouldered.
