Today my 32-40 load was 13.5 gr 4759, no wad or fill, and a 160 gr bullet. 100 yards. Shot well but I noticed a number of pieces of the powder in the barrel. Didn’t burn.
I have used 4198 and never seen this with it?

Nothing to worry about. It's common for IMR powders to do that.

sometimes,if it's safe, increasing the size of the charge makes 'em go away. funny, that I learned that cure from an old mentor while I was shooting 4198. never happened to me with that wonderful 4759.

Ahh, but 4759 is/was an SR powder not IMR (although made by the IMR powder company).

When it was discontinued I frantically searched out every granule of 4759 I could find, and at that point bragged that I had a lifetime supply. I guess I better consult the actuary tables to see how much longer I have because  the stash is dwindling (but still in excess of 15 pounds). That, or re-start a bunch of bad lifestyle habits to purposely make good on my bragging.

I still curse Hodgdon/IMR heartily at every opportunity for their dastardly discontinuance of SR-4759.

I only found one cast-bullet 4759 load that burned all the powder, or at least left no kibbles in the barrel.  That was a pretty stiff (for cast bullets) load in a bottleneck .30 Remington in a Model 30 bolt action.  It burned all the powder but wasn't very accurate.  Reducing the powder charge left the barrel looking like autumn leaves on a bike path after every shot, but the bullets clustered nicely.

Sometimes I'd blow the granules out of the barrel before the next shot, sometimes not.  It never seemed to make any difference in accuracy.

Like they say in the wiseguy movies, "Fuhgedabahdit!"

I've limited my use of 4759, for the past 30 years and still have about 1.5 lb of it.

I've only used it as a duplex primer, up to 6.0 gr and for my 44 Stevens at 12.2 gr or 20 gr by volume in a lyman measure. A t the rate I'm shooting now, it will out last me.

BTW, I only use it with Rem 1 1/2, 2 1/2 and F150 primers as that has been the most accurate primer for it.

It wasn't only 4759 that got the axe.  It was all the SR (sporting rifle) powders.

Their production was too expensive and the market had dwindled.

How about 32-40 loads using 5744?

Why not begin a thread for that powder and leave the discussion here to 4759?
I'm not upset that you ask, but it really is a whole different kettle of fish.

I too lament the loss of 4759. I had a load for .45-70 with a 330 gr cast bullet that was great in every rifle l used it in .5744 is close but not worth the money and I noticed that it has a snappier recoil compared to a load using 4759 at the same velocity.
