RB #5 serial number

I just acquired a #5 rolling block carbine bearing the Mexican crest on the receiver bridge. The lower tang bears a serial number, the only Remington mfr. RB with a SN I have ever seen. Comments?

All of my Remington rollers have a number stamped on the left side of the upper and lower tang. Butt stock must be removed to see them. Never had one with a visible number with the stock in place. Serial number or assembly number IDK. My Modelo Argentino carbine has non matching numbers.

My 1897 #5 has a 3 digit number, under the pin retention plate.

Likely not serial No. 1 of all Rolling Blocks, but serial No. 1 of that particular order. They serial numbered military orders each in their own order I believe.

That's what I wondered. My tang number is in the 64XX range and is professionally done. Are the ones you have seen on the lower tang and factory quality?

Interesting. Mine has a three-digit number also, but on the receiver face, below the breech block pin.

Usually I see the numbers on military Rollers on the left side of the upper and lower tangs. Can't say as I've seen any on the barrel end of the actions ever?
On civilian Rollers it's on the lower tang by the rear screw, and numbers on the sides of the tangs wont usually be the same. I am told on Sporting rifles the side numbers are a "work order" number to let workers know the configuration of the gun.

A "real" #5, as opposed to the military models 1896 and 1902, will be marked 5-xxx. First offered  in 1898, only198 were ever sold.  Calling the military models a #5, while commonly done, is really a misnomer.

Regarding SNs on military RB rifles;  The vast majority of the military RBs that have visible SNs were stamped there by the contracting countries after receipt from Remington.  The most common location is the bottom of the lower tang (trigger guard).  At least one central or South American country stamped the SN on the forward portion of the right sidewall.  See Layman's book for country ID or better yet purchase his new to be released book on the Military Rolling Blocks of the Americas.  I have had a few rifles through the shop with SNs stamped on the lower front left side of the receiver and equally uncommon the top of the receiver ring.

Kenn,
I've had quite a few Swede Rolling Block military actions that had 3-4 digit numbers one the left side of top and lower tangs.

Ken, on the top 1897 rifle, you can see the 3 digits of mine.

Is that a common place?
