I couldn't get my latest crop of large bore  Martinis to shoot well enough to hunt with, so fell back on my Ruger No.1  450/400 3 NE.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Wow!  That looks to be ONE NICE BEAR!!  Congrats & well done!

I had a #1 in 450/400 and really liked that cartridge.  I'd still like a double in that cartridge

Great photography makes big game bigger looking.

Really only good medium size bear.  The last bear I killed was 1982.  That bear was a 6' 6" square sow.  That rug fell apart years ago.

This bear only squared a 5' 8".  It was a sow also.

Wife wanted a bear rug, so I got her one, or will next spring when it is ready.

This hunt was with my son,  and a sorta of replacement for this gun.  I bought this rifle to take to South Africa for Cape Buffalo.  Age and health cancelled that idea.

My son's bear was 6' 1" square

I have now taken feral hog, whitetail deer and a bear with this gun.  Some say overkill, I say good blood trail.

Always nice to hunt with a single shot.  I have a Ruger #1 in 7mm Krag Improved that I like to use when I know that the range will most likely be 250 yards or more.  Did you use a cast or jacketed bullet?  I like that "good blood trail"  Tom

I have been saying this is a 400 grain bullet but this is incorrect.  I pulled a round down and weighed everything this morning and checked my load spread sheet. THe bullet is a 300 grain bullet.

Here is my load.

3/17/2025
Barnes 0.411" 405 WINCHESTER TSX 300 GR FB
RL15      67 gr
WWLR
Hornaday cases

That is a 100 yard group. My ex-son-in-law shot a much better group with this gun.

I had to go back and check what I was loading in my 1902 Webley with the 3 1/4 case. With a 400 grain Barnes it was 80 grains of 4350 for 2085 fps and with a 300 grain Barnes it was 84 grains of 4350 for 2220 fps. These were the original Barnes bullets that were jacketed with copper tubing which came in .0040 and .0030 thicknesses IIRC.
