I didn't know Stevens used different spacing on bases? I knew they used smaller screw sizes.
I have two rare barreled single shots that both have oddball spacing on the bases. One is a Bremer High Wall with Schoyen barrel, and the other a Zettler Ballard. Neither uses standard bases, and I'm getting ready to mill one hole on bases to make it slotted to rework standard bases to fit both. Each rifle is different from each other too!

I found that out by looking at Steve Earle's web site.   When I measured the hole spacing on mine I thought they were just an oddball custom setup.  I imagine mine was drilled and tapped a very long time ago.  I cant imagine anyone in recent history that would have done it.  Unfortunately one of the tiny screws is broken off in the hole.  I guess the last time someone decided to take off the blocks.

Chris.

I make to claim to this but it could be interesting, Command adhesive mounting strips: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

I've sucessfully used crazy glue right out of the tube but only on 22s. Acetone dissolves it with out harming the finish but beware. When it comes loose it pops right off and who wants to see their scope bounce off of concrete.

This IS a useful thread. The two rifles I have for consideration are an 1885 HW 45-60 WCF original with an original Winchester mid-range tang sight. It will not be molested.
The other rifle is a S. Sharps with an Axtell Vernier mid-range
sight. The Axtell OAL tends to bother my upper cheek if I attempt to use the adjustable sporting rear sight. Perhaps a temp mount on the Sharps will help solve this riddle or head me in the right direction.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Just remove the staff on the Axtell when you want to shoot it with barrel sights.

I did that -of course. Sometimes it's just easier to sight through the rear aperture to the original early Lyman Beach ft blade or
ft small globe...lining up the rear sporting V. The rear sight adjusts by a small  wheel and fits the wider app. 5/16 in Sharps dovetail. Unusual sight. I could sharpen the top of the Axtell staff and then ...use it as a bayonet on elk. Shocked
